The End of an Era - Shutting Down Cloud Nine

I just want to add to this thread. I haven't been on this website for years but something told me to just lurk for a bit. Then I came up on this. I had the honor of working with Ted for a while. Whenever I talk about him, I always say he one of the smartest hardest working people I know. I...

    Teterboro (TEB) or Linden (LDJ)

Lindens not all that bad. You can take a cab to the train and take the train to Port Authority. That's on 42nd st. Very easy, and fairly close to where you could renedez-vous with your relatives. I used to take the bus to TEB when I was taking lessons there. It could be an inconvenience if...

Got a tiny amount of actual IMC

It gets to be a lot of fun. You may prefer it after a while too because there is so much more information on the instruments. Remember in The Matrtix when the guy was looking at the screen with l the green letters running down it and he said somethingg like "i see a beautiful woman in a red...

Why are the airlines so much safer than GA?

You've never flown a Dash 8. We dont pack the baggage compartment out of CG, we make sure the rampers dont because they will. If the deice isnt working., the were restricted as per the MEL and most of the time have to make sure that the dispatcher didnt screw up and file us at an icing altitude...

Why are the airlines so much safer than GA?

Machines that can flynin all weather until the deice system is MEL'd, a baggage crew to baby sit because the load thig wrong, angry pasengers due to the slow rampers and consequential missed connections, amd fuelers who leave the latches opena dn caps hanging down. The PIC is responsible for...

The one I was thining of was a video of a military pilot lecturing on complacency and rituals. Thats a good article tho.

Why are the airlines so much safer than GA?

Ha! I fly the Dash 8. You should see the passenger's faces when they see props. Then they make a B line for the 777 parked next to us. Its pretty funny. I know what you mean. Our missed approach callouts are "Set condition levers max" "Set power" "Power set" "Flaps one notch up"...

Why are the airlines so much safer than GA?

True. Most airlines are an accident away from going out of business so they press the issue. As for GA. I'd imagine that going home alive is motivation enough for safety.

Why are the airlines so much safer than GA?

I argree with you that proficiency is huge, but repetition can be the enemy. It can breed some serious complacency. There was a really good video on rituals and complacency floating around that I can't seem to find now. Basically, this military pilot had a way of confirming that the gear...

Why are the airlines so much safer than GA?

Regulations. Ted and I were having this conversation the other day. It seems the more people you are likely to kill, the more regulated it is 121 is very strict, 135 gives you a longer leash, and 91 almost anything goes. The equipment necessary for certification gives you better situational...

I agree with Ted. 900 foot cielings is more than enough time to make a normal landing. Especially at night when everything in lit up.

Agreed. Eye witnesses are valueable to a point. A lot of people don't really know what it is that they're hearing or seeing, especially with all the excitement. A lot of the information witnesses give are unfamiliar, and not well coded in their memories. For instance: if youre familiar...

Shelter Island was private when I used to hang out there, but that was before I started flying. A long time ago.

Nice! One of my best friends has a house on Shelter Island right next to the grass strip. We had many a booze filled night out there. Fun times.
