Panel upgrading - Really, how bad?

Being a wet pump and the suction gage and the vacuum pop-up red button are just to the left of the Aspen it should be ok. In 35+ years of flying I have had 2 vacuum pump failures (both dry pumps). With the vacuum attitude gyro he will not have to worry about time after an alternator or...

    AOA discussion

After 35 years of flying my bonanza, I do not think it needed it; however, I am transitioning my son from the C172 and it is a nice comforting addition to the panel for him. I actually used it (to my surprise) when I took off from General Dewit Spain (M01) on my Jan flight to San Diego last...

    NA Anyone using Veeam backups?

I actually had to do a VEEM restore. Unfortunately it was my PDC. Kerberos was an issue and I ended up making my backup DC the PDC. Kerberos was an issue all the way through the exchange server. The VEEM restore was the easiest part.

Panel upgrading - Really, how bad?

I was not sure that I wanted to be limited on battery backup of 30 minutes. With the 3rd attitude gyro (vacuum) I do not have a time limit on an electrical failure. The money is not an issue. My son will take over the Bonanza and I do not want him to have any unexpected financial surprises...

    Monitoring 121.5

Never have monitored in more than 35 years of flying. All my cross countries are IFR so I am in constant ATC contact. With ADS_B out in both planes I fly, I might be inclined to go VFR. If I do that I might keep 121.5 on a listening watch.

    KX-155 Refurbishment, Replace??

last year I replace both displays on my C172. When I did my avionics upgrade to my planes I moved the Garmin 430 to the Cessna and one of the 155 to the bonanza. I also placed my PSI audio panel into the Cessna. I wanted to put the GDL 88 from the bonanza to the Cessna; however, the cost of...

Panel upgrading - Really, how bad?

The rule of thumb I use is the value of the plane is increased by 1/2 of the cost of newly installed avionics without any consideration of the installation cost.

    Garmin GTN750, or Avidyne IFD540?

Just flew from MD to San Diego (20 hours out <13 hours back) and all units worked properly. The Aspen failure has not occurred again nor does the ASPEN unit have any history or ability for the avionics shop to identify what caused the failure. One interesting item with the GTN 750 is that the...

    Adobe Deli in Deming, NM

On a flight from MD to CA last month, we stopped in Deming, NM for fuel and hotel both ways. Airport manager is very good and he has a van he let us use overnight for the hotel and restaurant. The Adobe Deli was a real pleasure and the food and atmosphere are worth the stop.

What is the flight from Florida to the Bahamas like in a single engine?

I have done it about 20 times. Less frequently since Sept 11. The most important item to remember is that flying at night going there is very much an instrument flight. My first night flight there, I was glad to have my instrument rating because the stars were visible on the ocean and one...

Panel upgrading - Really, how bad?

I addition to the cost, the integration can take longer than the installation. I went all electric and it took from August 18th until the first week in December to get everything the way I wanted it. Items were as mundane was changing mph to knots, calibrating a AOA, having a faulty SV...

*NEWS* DEDICATED ANGLE OF ATTACK WEBSITE

I just calibrated the AOA on my Aspen 1000 and I used it on my flight to CA from MD. It really gave me a bit of piece of mind on my take off from M01 (Memphis area) in 50 + knot winds up to 7000 feet with a 74 Knot headwind to Rusty Williams 3F3. In that turbulence, climbing to altitude was a...

Help me understand autopilot compatibility with the Garmin G5 and/or Dynon d10a.

The STCs are a real pain. I put an ASPEN 1000 in my bonanza, and I could not utilize the VFR version of the device because I had an autopilot (which used the turn coordinator). I could not even keep my DG for the heading mode of the Stec 60-2. I had to bite the bullet for the IFR version...

    Filiming training flights in cockpit

I am a CFI at FDK and if one of my students has issues, I ask them if I may video their lessons. I them place them on my web site here: https://clarityphotos.smugmug.com/Aviation/Pattern-Work-at-FDK . 30 years ago I had a WWII weather observer as a student. He had real issues and I was at my...

    Risk vs Experience?

As a CFI, I do not let my students go for the flight test without at least a couple of hours of actual. Yes my ticket is on the line in actual, but after 15 - 20 hours I am certain that the student can stay within instrument parameters and I go for actual whenever possible. It also depends upon...

    Bend the rules or not

Some issues depend upon the shop. Two repair stations would not sign off my 172 annual unless the wind screen attachment rivets were replaced with screws. One in my area one shop does not see it as an issue. One shop with my annual on the bonanza would not pass the annual without replacing the...

Panel upgrading - Really, how bad?

Installation of the Aspen 1000, L3 standby attitude gyro, PS 450 audio panel, (movement of the King 155 from my 172 to the bonanza) and the GTN 750 as just north of 60K. Part of the issue was converting the analog STEC 60-2 autopilot from analog to digital and having to send the 60-2 to the...

    I hate my directional gyro

If you install the aspen 1000, you will never have to adjust your DG. It is automatic on both the Aspen and my backup L3. I did not know how much I would like this feature.

    Garmin GTN750, or Avidyne IFD540?

It is in the avionics shop since Thursday. I did power it down (on separate switch) and it came up working after the reboot. No news yet from the shop.
