    Dining near Wittman Field

I've heard a couple recommendations for SOS. Is that the place with the bikini beer servers? For some reason my wife vetoed that option last time we were there

Only 2 days for Oshkosh, which ones are best?

That is no exaggeration. Last time I was there (2015) I ordered fuel on Tuesday afternoon and it was delivered Thursday morning, right before I was ready to depart for home. Didn't even get a full load as the truck ran out of fuel a few gallons short of full tanks.

    Dining near Wittman Field

This may not be an option for me this year since I won't have a car, but Wendt's On the Lake is a fun place to go. It's on Lake Winnebago about half way to Fon du Lac. Their specialty is fried perch, so don't expect a fine dining experience  But during Oshkosh week it's got lively...

    Dining near Wittman Field

Where does everyone like to go for food while at Oshkosh? For me, Friar Tuck's is a must do, but really only because it is so convenient to the North 40. It's at the northwest corner of the airport, a short walk from the North 40 shuttle bus.

Only 2 days for Oshkosh, which ones are best?

You are right. Not sure why I thought pre '75. I'll be there myself in a 1975 C-182, but I don't mind the North 40 at all. That is where the best showers are, and it's a short shuttle ride to off-site shopping and dining.

Only 2 days for Oshkosh, which ones are best?

That should not be the takeaway from this. There is plenty to see all week long! If you want to see the airport at it's peak capacity, then be there Monday. Without a doubt there will be some planes leaving after a few days, but others will arrive. The first night airshow is Wednesday, and...

Only 2 days for Oshkosh, which ones are best?

For GA parking/camping, if you are not there by mid afternoon on Saturday before the show, you will be pretty far back from the main flightline and showers. If you arrive Sunday, you will be all the way back or even in overflow camping at Fon du Lac or Appleton. Either way there are shuttles...

Flying Club and FBO Acceptance of BasicMed

The challenge to flying clubs and rental ops is that there is no government issued document certifying that a pilot is good to go under basic med. A pilot has to have a doc sign off, and he/she must pass the online quiz, but aside from the printed form that says you passed the quiz, there is...

    Cessna 182 fuel burn

Excellent point. In our club, standard procedure is to always switch the fuel tank selector to the right tank when parked. This will eliminate cross-feeding from one tank to the other. It is most useful when fueling, but also should prevent leaking from full tanks when parked on slightly...

    Cessna 182 fuel burn

My flying club has a 182P with an O-470 and we have 10 years of data showing a pretty consistent 12.5 to 13 gph. Everyone pays on the tach, so generally they aren't running it too hard. 22 squared is probably typical.

    Basicmed and color vision deficiency

As for anti-collision lights, who says something like that? Certainly not me. Now if that other pilot forgot to turn his lights on as the sun went down, then all of a sudden that technology on the cockpit is all you got. But really, my only point to ADS-B is that we have ever more technology...

    Basicmed and color vision deficiency

Excellent thread! I too have the restrictions on my medical related to color vision deficiency, but to be honest, I've always felt that the night flying restriction is sort of arbitrary. With the sole exception of being able to distinguish the colors of anti-collision lights, there is really...

    Icon A5 Dunked...

Seems like hating on Icon is a thing that a lot of people are into. But why? They think outside the box and have developed a very innovative product. GA needs that, and I wish them only success. As for a landing that was bad enough to cause damage, it could happen to any aircraft, land or...

Best "Budget" ANR Headset for Passenger

+1 for Flightcom Denali. I've had a pair for about 2.5 years and I've been very happy with them. Lightweight and comfortable. Not as good as the thousand dollar offerings, but for the price I think they are a great value.

Accidents giving GA a bad name

I've heard it said that statistically, general aviation is slightly safer than motocycle racing. That is not much reassurance, but it is misleading to look at all of general aviation as a single activity prone to the same risks. If you spend some time reading through the NTSB reports...

Here's the training video. Landing technique discussed for several minutes beginning at about 8:00.

Video of the A26 gear collapse

There is an old training film from WWII on flying the A-26 that I've seen on Youtube that demonstrates the proper technique for landing this plane. You basically fly it right down into ground effect and let the plane settle onto the runway without any discernable flare. It's one of the few...

Video of the A26 gear collapse

I did see another video of this same plane landing at OSH a couple days earlier. It was a really hard landing! This plane is meant to be landed flat with all three wheels touching down at about the same time. The video I saw shows it flaring and then stalling from a foot or two off the runway...

Video of the A26 gear collapse

They declared an emergency about 20 minutes before landing. Came in for landing on rwy 27 initially but had to go around. Then made a low approach and tower reported back that nose gear was turned sideways in the wheel well. They declared an emergency and requested 36 because it's the longest...
