Operating in Class D without clearance

Pre-coordination has been a funny thing in this area. 75% of the time they say “no paperwork on file” when I get there but no worries, we get it done. I always pre-coordinate with LAX, San Diego, and John Wayne because they request it. Ontario doesn’t care if I do. I joke with the controllers by...

Operating in Class D without clearance

You can tell pretty easily who the power trippers are. They don’t seem overwhelmed like the obviously inexperienced controllers.

Operating in Class D without clearance

It's not lost on me what this post looks like coming from somebody with my experience. But having the conversation with a group of pilots over the weekend there were strong opinions on both sides, so I didn't see it as completely stupid to post here. Controllers have a lot of control that...

    Well 91.123 covers it.

Operating in Class D without clearance

Hawthorne for whatever reason has become a big problem. I need to operate 2.5 miles south of the field where nothing is going on and I’ll be told to go away. Occasionally Palomar. In doing this for 24 years in this area it’s never been an issue until this last year or so.

Operating in Class D without clearance

But you don't need a clearance to operate in their airspace.

Operating in Class D without clearance

What regulation gives a Class D controller the right to tell you to remain clear of the Class D airspace?

Operating in Class D without clearance

Can they tell you to leave? Well, of course they can tell you that, but do you have to comply if there is no safety issue in your PIC opinion?

Operating in Class D without clearance

It's happening more and more often. Too busy. Seems more inexperienced controllers are in the tower now.

Operating in Class D without clearance

Can they though? I've called and they always say "traffic and workload permitting". That's a big help.

Operating in Class D without clearance

I do aerial photography work in Southern California and more recently have had Class D tower controllers tell me they are too busy to let me operate in their airspace. It used to only happen once in a while but it is happening more often, and I end up wasting a lot of time and money when I turn...

Expired CFI to Sport Pilot CFI

I was hoping that taking the checkride for Powered Parachute Flight Instructor would reinstate my regular CFI ratings (ASEL, Glider, Instrument). But unfortunately it doesn't. Furthermore, I would need to surrender my regular CFI ratings if I got my powered parachute instructor rating without...

Expired CFI to Sport Pilot CFI

I finally received a reply from the FAA on the original question. It is very thorough and hopefully can help somebody else with the same question down the road. Question: Can a subpart H flight instructor certificate issued in accordance with Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part...

Expired CFI to Sport Pilot CFI

Interesting. So it’s just a logbook endorsement for Sport Pilot category/class. I didn’t realize that.

Expired CFI to Sport Pilot CFI

I want to teach Powered Parachute. The Sport CFI is issued for a specific category/class. Powered Parachutes are a specific rating. I currently have Private Pilot Powered Parachute on my license (but Commercial for single and multi engine). It's not a very uncommon scenario and most everybody at...

Expired CFI to Sport Pilot CFI

I was estimating $1000 to get checked out in a Cessna, then rent that same plane for the reinstatement, plus the examiner fee. I wanted to avoid spending this money and effort, but I'm to just go ahead and do it to be safe. No issues with my medical.

I sent an email to the Training and Certification Group as mentioned above and will post the reply.

Expired CFI to Sport Pilot CFI

I could reinstate one of my instructor ratings but they are 25 years expired now and it would take a good amount of time and money. I’d like to avoid it if possible. I’ve been speaking with the DPE that will be doing my Sport Pilot Instructor checkride and he was unsure of my scenario, so he...

Expired CFI to Sport Pilot CFI

Unfortunatly #2 came from the big boss in the Airmen Certification Branch in Oklahoma. But I still think it's BS.
