    Altitude reminder?

I have a KFC150 autopilot with altitude preselect in my Mooney. I can set the desired altitude and let the autopilot get me there or hand fly it. Regardless it will ding when within 1000 ft either way, going up or down.

Fat Dude (well, maybe not FAT, but bigger than I'd like to be) and a Mooney M20C

Cessna... better than a Mooney in every way... until they leave the ground.

BTW... entry and exit are a lot more important in other airplanes. Because you'll be doing it a lot more. We almost always can skip stops that others in C177, Bo A36's, C182's, etc are making on the same trip.

Fat Dude (well, maybe not FAT, but bigger than I'd like to be) and a Mooney M20C

A little late to this thread, but I've certainly got some experience here. My wife and I are close to the same size as you and your wife. I started out with a Comanche 250 that belonged to a friend. But I got to fly it whenever I wanted and helped maintain it. It was how I got my HP/Cplx and...

    Choosing a hangar

I used to be at a small uncontrolled field in my own hangar, 50 min away. I'm now in a shared FBO hangar, 20 min away. And the best part for me is an ILS. It's nice to get home after long trips and not worry about weather.

    Engine Monitor?

Anyone who says an Engine Monitor is a waste of money on a relatively simple, naturally aspirated, small bore airplane engine, just doesn't know how to read an engine monitor and is speaking from a position of ignorance. Or they have more money than they need and therefore don't care about the...

    Aircraft ownership.

Mooney M20C with manual gear. Excellent IFR platform, and qualifies as complex for commercial, also cheap (145 kts at 8 gph) for cross country flying, also important for the commercial. The manual gear is bullet proof and nothing to go wrong (no more expensive then fixed gear to maintain).

Skidding after touchdown in crosswind landings

First, don't use any flaps. Second, hold it off as long as possible. You'll still be fast which will give you better rudder authority, but when the wheels do touch, you'll have the weight to hold them down. The full aileron into the wind is correct.

    Fly to Breakfast from KDTO

For future reference... We ended up going to Cleburne. They have two courtesy cars which makes it easy to get into town. We had breakfast at Susannah's Homestyle Cooking. The food was great and only 5 minutes from the airport.

    Breitling and Sponsorships

I like the large faced watches. I've always wanted a Breitling but always had other priorities in watches. I have a Rolex, a Bell&Ross, a U-boat, and Omega. Some day I'll own a Breitling. By the way, always buy second hand. Retail is for suckers.

Pulling the trigger and starting training

Hey Josh, I was in your exact same situation. I kept putting off learning to fly as every time I saved up a few bucks, life would show up and pull rank. The solution was to forget saving for it. All you need is enough cash for one lesson. And then when you have the cash, the weather's right, the...

    Gear Up Landing ?

BTW... if something happens to me while flying and my non-pilot wife has to land the plane, even if only to save her own life, she will be landing gear up. She understands that no matter what the guy in the tower says, she will be coming in gear up and right down the center of the longest/widest...

Dallas in November, airport of choice?

I fly into Love ever other month or so. I'd recommend checking by phone ahead of time about ramp fee, security fee, handling fee's, etc. And which can be waived by buying fuel and how much.

Current Database and Obstacles for checkride?

Don't say the terrain and obstacles are not required. On a recent IPC, I pointed out on startup that the Nav database was current. The CFI said "good" and we moved on.

Digital Log problems going into IR training

Try Pilot Partner. But with any electronic log, a backup is important. And actually if you hadn't noticed, that applies to ALL electronic data such as pictures, school work, documents, phone contacts, addresses, etc. So it should be easy and second nature by now to back up your electronic log...
