NYC SFRA in aircraft without electrical system

Is it legal to fly up the Hudson River, below the bravo airspace without a transponder ? I don't see anything in 14CFR93 that requires a transponder any more...

How to find out about a restricted area online

Pretty much what the title says. On most apps, you can touch the restricted area and get info about it. But is there a place online where you can do the same ? Is there any place online where restricted spaces and their altitudes etc are listed. I know it's on the edge off sectionals, but...

DTOPS DECAL-huge delay. Is confirmation good enough to go to Canada ?

I ordered a decal from DTOPS so I could fly from the US to Canada. I never received it in the mail so I tried calling and they say that because of partial government shutdown they are only taking voicemails. I went back online and my order status is still listed as "Fulfillment Initiated"...

I miss the 4 Panel Surface Prognostic Charts of DUATS

DUATS used to have, before it was decommissioned, a really nice weather product--the four panel surface prognostic chart. I really liked it for long range (2-3 days in advance) flight planning. Now that DUATS is no more, does anyone know of a site where you can see all 4 panels on one page ...

Can You Fly a Piper Cub J-3 at Night

I was just wondering if you can fly a Piper Cub at night. Presuming it has either an engine which allows and alternator/generator or a stand-alone battery good enough to power anti-collision lights. Obviously it wasn't certified for night VFR back in the day...and I'm also assuming the pilot...

    Cirrus vs A36

Just wondering if anyone knows any recent report comparing safety of the Bonanza A36 to the Cirrus.

    VNC charts for Canada flight

Thinking about flying up through New York to Mont Laurier Airport (CSD4). I have WingX which does have the airport on the map, but it's near the northern edge of my coverage area, so I'd like to have a paper chart for backup. Even better would be an ipad version (I know Foreflight has them...

Can you plug aviation headsets into your stereo ?

In flight it seems like sound comes out of one earpiece louder than the other. With standard aircraft headset jacks can you plug the headset jack (i.e. NOT the microphone jack) into the standard 1/4 in headphone output of a home stereo so that I can check my headsets in the comfort of my living...

Cleared for the approach when flying VFR

(This may have been covered before, so feel free to point me to the thread...I couldn't find anything when searching) Getting flight following and flying VFR, I asked for a practice ILS 36 and the controller said "Cleared ILS 36, proceed direct ABCDE" (the IAF). What am I "cleared" for...

    Powered Headsets

I love my headsets but occasionally have had the batteries die on approach. Very distracting to have to reach into bag and change batteries. I could change them before every flight and this is clearly the cheapest option to avoid the problems. Or I can get the 6 pin outlet installed into my...

How would you fly to Halifax from New Jersey ?

I'm thinking about flying, when it gets a little warmer from New Jersey to Halifax, CYHZ. I'm instrument rated and will be flying a Mooney. There seems to be this pesky thing called either the Atlantic Ocean or the Bay of Fundy in the way. The shortest reasonable route might be over Gran...

Why is LDA RWY 33 at KMTN LDA (and not an ILS) approach ?

Looks to be lined up with Rwy. Final approach course is 326 degrees and rwy is 326 degrees per chart supplement. Any thoughts ?

ILS OR LOC/DME Y RWY 19 at KRUT

Maybe I'm missing something, but this approach seems confusing to me, at least using NACO charts. If you are flying the ILS without DME (and without GPS in lieu of DME) how could you identify FAROX on the missed ? I don't see any note that says DME or RADAR required for the ILS ?

Do you need to listen to station identifier if PFD (e.g. Aspen) identifies it ?

Suppose you set up for an ILS, tune the ILS frequency and the PFD shows the identifier corresponding to the ILS. Do you still need to listen to the identifier to verify the ILS is working ? How does the PFD (e.g. the Aspen) know the identifier of the station you've tuned ? Thoughts ?

How to fly ILS 01 at KALB from CIRRU ?

I know it's unlikely, but let's say you are flying WITH DME and WITHOUT GPS into KALB and approaching KALB northbound on V91 towards CIRRU. At CIRRU you receive clearance for ILS 01. You are using NACO charts. How would they expect you to navigate to the FAF ? The bold face line is to...

What percent of Gear Up Landings are simply "I forgot"

I just saw the aftermath of a gear up landing. Seems like pilot simply forgot to put the gear down. May have ignored gear warning horn. I've heard of cases where, despite pilot's effort, the gear could not be put down. Does anyone know what percent of gear up landings are due to pilot...

    Comm Failure

I've read the FARs and I know what they say I should I do when I experience comm failure, but the other day I was thinking about what would really happen if I really had COMM failure. Supposing my clearance is ....9000 feet...blah..blah...SBJ direct. And my airport is 15 miles from SBJ. What...

Trying to find old accident report C172 fuel exhaustion on ferry flight

I'm giving a talk and wanted to dig up an accident report from maybe 8 years ago (I could be wrong about the date). Someone was flying, I believe if memory serves me well (it usually doesn't) a Cessna 172 from the factory, I think delivering it to a customer and (no surprise) ran out of fuel...

WingX and TACs in Hudsor River Corridor

When flying the Hudsor River Corridor, one of the requirements is to carry a current New York Terminal Chart. With WingX I believe the only charts displayed are the sectional charts. I can, using Goodreader and the downloadable FAA TACs, meet this legal requirement and have the TAC on my Ipad...
