    Swan Song

12/7/2019...The day I gave Jeff a flight review. Why he picked me out of the hundreds of CFIs in AZ, I don't know. Heck, the ink of my ticket wasn't completely dry yet having only been a CFI for two years. I was shocked, humbled, and honored to even be asked. To say I was nervous would have...

An elephant in the room: poor diet and lifestyle can lead to medical issues

I knew an alcoholic like you. He just didn't care that booze would kill him; he said he just liked drinking and being drunk. I was there when he was carried out of his house. I don't remember any tears being shed.

An elephant in the room: poor diet and lifestyle can lead to medical issues

I'm probably out of step with the times, but... If you're a provider for your family, you should care. People depend on you. You also have a responsibility to set a good example for your children.

Garmin G5 Yellow Heading & Warranty Saga (retitled)

I say that all the time to the grumblers at my airport. You think Gamin is expensive, try John Deere.

You consider your strawman actual reasoning?

An elephant in the room: poor diet and lifestyle can lead to medical issues

Because our government has seen fit to make taxpayers foot the bill for a lot of people's health care, especially the demographic that doesn't seem to take an interest in their own health. Is there a correlation between exploding health care costs and widespread preventable chronic diseases...

An elephant in the room: poor diet and lifestyle can lead to medical issues

In the end, we're all terminal. But there is a relationship between healthspan and lifespan. This concept is explained in Peter Attia's book linked upthread. You don't have to be miserable and die early.

An elephant in the room: poor diet and lifestyle can lead to medical issues

 They have these new fangled things called weather forecasts and water.

An elephant in the room: poor diet and lifestyle can lead to medical issues

I have to buy my own health insurance, pay my own premiums. One of my biggest gripes is that there aren't separate risk pools for people who try to take care of themselves. We're all lumped together, for better or worse.

An elephant in the room: poor diet and lifestyle can lead to medical issues

The four horsemen of chronic disease according to Peter Attia: Cardiovascular disease - mostly preventable Cancer - somewhat preventable (smoking, alcoholism for example) Neurodegenerative disease (dementia) - jury is out on this one but physical activity is shown to have benefits in this area...

California FBOs Told To Stop Selling 100LL, Switch To G100UL

Wouldn't burning 100UL without the STC technically make your airplane unairworthy? An IA would likely notice during an annual inspection and might have something to say.

California FBOs Told To Stop Selling 100LL, Switch To G100UL

I was thinking more along the lines of a state government banning 100LL but airports having exclusive agreements with a distributor that only sells 100LL. Can't sell 100LL because of state regulation, can't sell 100UL because of contract. What then? The manager at my airport says selling...

California FBOs Told To Stop Selling 100LL, Switch To G100UL

The airport manager at my home field, a municipal airport, has said that the agreement for fuel sales with Phillips 66 is exclusive. If so, I would imagine that's a standard arrangement in most places. If one governmental agency bans a certain type of fuel that another governmental entity has...

    Starter not disengaged

I just installed the Bogert cables in my Cherokee. They're a bit pricey but worth it IMO. The improvement in starting is unbelievable. The Bogert kit enables compliance with Piper Service Bulletin 836A which seems like it affects nearly every Piper model out there. Piper Service Bulletin...

Garmin G5 Yellow Heading & Warranty Saga (retitled)

Something seems off. I haven't heard of shops having a relationship THAT bad with Garmin. I know Garmin is the 500lb gorilla everyone loves to hate though.

Garmin G5 Yellow Heading & Warranty Saga (retitled)

I just had this almost exact same problem and actually picked up my airplane today. Through thorough troubleshooting, the shop determined the CAN Bus termination block located at the magnetometer had a pin loose in the socket. They were close to replacing the magnetometer when they discovered...

    VFR weather minimums and patterns

In Arizona of all places. This airport didn't require SVFR but AWOS was reporting low visibility (I don't remember exactly what). A go around may have been iffy.

    Good data backup software

Who knows if it's a mistake, but all my files are automatically backed up to Google Drive. Accessing files on my cell phone has come in very handy numerous times. Google is free, and if something is free, then Google is benefitting from it, somehow. But given all the data breaches elsewhere...

Buckeye Arizona Air Fair and AOPA Fly-in Feb 16-18 2024

I dinged my prop pretty bad by a rock in the transient parking area during a previous fly-in at Buckeye. Hopefully they have improved it some. If you fly in, beware.
