    Multi-engine clubs/schools near DTW?

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone knows of flying clubs/schools that have twins for rental in the vicinity of DTW, in addition to: Solo Aviation at ARB and DCT Aviation at PTK. Any others? Thanks!

Looking for a 'flying buddy' to fly to Oct 4 AOPA event @ FDK

Hi all, looking for someone in/around DTW area who wants to go to the AOPA fly-in at FDK Oct 4. Arrive Fri, stay overnight, fly out Sat. I've asked all the pilots I know, they're either busy or not interested in going to this one (some have already been to Indy). I'd like to split the cost...

Students... What maneuvers do you do alone in practice area?

My personal opinion is that the falling leaf stall should be a required item. It is such a good training maneuver, teaching stall awareness, rudder awareness. My initial stall training was to incipient stall (take it to buffet, let the nose drop slightly, recover), not full stall recovery, and...

    Instrument training - prereqs?

There are a lot of good responses in this thread. My 2 cents, I'd say get comfortable with the radio and the a/c (power settings, holding alt/heading, etc). A/c control has to be ingrained/automatic so you devote mental capacity to other things. I'd add the following to the list of...

    Getting current again

Looks to me like you're being way too hard on yourself and stressing yourself out. If you feel like you're lacking the book knowledge, maybe study up a little in the meantime, but a lot of this is experience and "finger memory". You can read about communications & pattern work & t-o's /...

How long can a student pilot be a student pilot?

My experience was similar, in the "hand me your logbook" department. I was 23, by nature detail oriented and so forth, but when I started this business was completely foreign to me; my original CFI was not exactly forthcoming with info that didn't pertain to training that day. He seemed to...

Embarking on my longest flight yet...

You're right about the GPS, I missed the follow-up message where Joyce mentioned it. Yeah, the GPS shouldn't be necessary, but it's good to have for extra awareness (for instance better 'nearest' info in case of a problem). I drove by Shasta 2 years ago, and I was thinking to myself how cool...

    AOPA Membership Dues increase

This is a landmark case of the last several years, it's being watched closely by pro and anti aviation groups. We fail this one, it's going to change airport closure efforts from a trickle (not such a trickle today) into a flood. I have to admit that I'm bothered by the big cash hoard, and I...

    AOPA Membership Dues increase

Even if the cost went up to *gasp* $100 a year (which is what, the cost of one hamburger? :rolleyes2:), I'd still pay it. The benefits to me outweigh the negatives. But to each their own. P.S. The FT and AP mags in themselves are worth half the membership fee, IMO.

    AOPA Membership Dues increase

Oh come on guys. 30% or not, it's still relatively small amounts ($1 to $2 increase is a whopping 100%, so what?). I'm sure lawyers and lobbyists aren't getting cheaper. AOPA took a PR hit from members and cut back some. I may not agree with everything, but AOPA is our only significant...

How did Aviation capture your heart?

    Wow! Way to go man!

    Basics Are Good To Remember

Well IMHO you're still putting all your eggs in one basket even with 3 GPS'es. This whole civilian GPS craze took place during peacetime, during a solar low, and fat gov't budgets. Risk 1: solar activity. Risk 2: Chinese or Russians, or both, deciding to lob a few at our GPS satellites. IMO...

How did Aviation capture your heart?

Great, go get 'em tiger. So what do you fly now? Gulfstream Girl (she now calls herself Global Girl) has a sort of similar story to yours. She was a model from central Europe who was scared of flying commercially, then she discovered GA and now she's a G-something pilot out of Teterboro. She...

How did Aviation capture your heart?

Wow, interesting! Would love to hear more of your background. I live right under the approach for DTW when they're landing to the southwest. Any time a jumbo comes flying over the house, I have to run out and see it for myself. It's cool that I can usually find it on FlightAware and...

    ipad

I'm a cheapskate so I'm still tooling around with an iPad 1. I'll keep using it for as long as it does the job. FF no longer provides upgrades for iOS 5.1, but my older FF still works fine. I just bought myself my first ANR headset after 14 years of flying.

    when do you typically solo?

I took about 30 hrs to solo, a pretty long time. WX & schedule wouldn't cooperate so I would have to play catchup on the next flight. The flip side was that I was ready to go when the day finally came.

    Basics Are Good To Remember

Well, not so much here. We've had a bunch of VORs decommed so CFIs are taking their students to the few that are left, and the rest of us use it for 30-day VOR checks.

    Pre-Solo Student Learning Plateau

I would totally recommend that. I know it helped me when I was struggling. Good rudder control is one of the hardest things to master, we in tricycle gear planes don't give it the appreciation that it deserves.

    Composite flight plan

I also vote for an IFR flight plan, you can always ask for an alt or route change if you need to, and can always cancel. And at higher elevations do not accept a vector from ATC unless you know where it's going to take you.
