    Possible Dangers of Memory Flying

I had an aero prof say much the same thing about the use of obscure greek word roots for engineering phenomena (for example "phugoid"). Ten years later I had a law professor who said "we us latin to keep the scum confused." Neither was particularly self-aware.

    KSNA

The guide that Rick182 posted above was invaluable the first time I flew up from CRQ as a brand new pilot. The other thing I found (and I can't find it now, of course) was some student's notes he/she posted online about the radio calls to depart SNA. Having only flow out of CRQ and smaller...

NPS attempting to close airstrip at Stovepipe Wells

I could easily see this being the case here, where NPS bureaucrats in DC want one thing while the more freedom-minded rangers in the park itself want another.

pilotinstitute.com - has anyone used it?

I haven't, though over the past several years I have from time to time dug into the concept of instrument flying, and the various methods of achieving the rating. I'm 50, but find I'm still a reasonably quick learner, and I know from experience that I'm a visual learner. My real challenge will...

Civilian aircraft, landing at military fields....permission

That's useful info. Where do they usually have you park? I'm imagining behind some hangar in the north 40 next to all the unfinished homebuilts started by JOs over the years!

My epic cross country flight in a humbling little airplane...

I missed this tale last year so I'm glad you brought it back up. At "lifesaver colored hair" I thought "this guy could be a Marine." Once you mentioned humping gear up stairs, I was pretty sure. I hit the line about the Stumps, jumped up and barked "Semper Fi, brother!" Great story, IK04.

Relatively low-maintenance airplanes that have decent cross-country performance?

Thanks for the reminder! One of the great underrated comedians.

    The Otto Aviation Celera 500L

My last engineering class was decades ago, so maybe it's a New Math thing, but I have no idea what "> 50% lower" means. Instinctively I interpret it the same way you do, but the phrasing is so imprecise as to appear deliberately misleading, or careless. But still a cool plane and I'm with you...

Using X-Plane 11 VR and VATSIM for IFR Practice?

Not to hijack the thread, but how long does it take to get proficient enough with the simulator software? I'm interested in using pilotedge during IFR training, but I'm worried I'll just be crashing my simulated Cherokee at the departure end before I get to the useful part.

Headset advice- what you wish you knew?

For me, it was more a matter of justifying well more than 10% of the expected total cost of the certificate on a headset when cheaper adequate ones were available. And when it came time to get a headset (my son wanted to get me one for my birthday), I chose a QT Halo and now I can't imagine...

    Saw a Grumman Today

And when you remember to hold your neck still you forget that your shins are about to smash into the bottom of the seat in front of you! Got on and off a carrier a few times in one, but had one less landing than takeoff (parachute ops). Good stuff.

    Catalina Getting a Makover
