    Why are aircraft radios AM?

Ahh, but you forgot to take the other plane into account. If you and I are both flying towards each other at 100mph, our shift would be a whopping 0.4 Hz :-) Thanks for crunching the numbers. I had always been curious...

    Why are aircraft radios AM?

Does Doppler effect play into the squeals at all? Seems like that could be a reason why two aircraft's carriers are at different frequencies (besides the "cheap oscillator" explaination).

    Why are aircraft radios AM?

I've been playing around with my scanner a bit and have noticed that most other VHF radio services are FM (broadcast, marine, amateur, etc). Does anyone know the history/reason why the aircraft band uses AM?

    Alaska Air retires Mud Hens

Ed, I was just reading your post and got a phone call from my neighbors across the street. They wanted to know what the big deal was about license vs certificate, since they could read it off my screen. :P

    Not flying today

KTTA 161643Z AUTO 30019G44KT 10SM SCT065 13/M03 A2965 RMK AO2 Runway heading is 030/210, so this is a direct crosswind. Local news said the FAA had ordered all outbound flights grounded. I couldn't find a NOTAM to that effect. Maybe tower is just refusing clearances.

Martha King involved in airplane crash

Wow, I was only halfway reading this and thought you said Martha Stewart. I was expecting one of those broomstick pictures (not that I personally have anything against Martha!)

    Selling My Plane

I'm selling my plane. Flying is really dangerous and shouldn't be undertaken by anyone. A few years ago, we had a local plane crash. It crashed within a mile of an elementary school. Though the pilot wasn't injured, it could have been a lot worse. What if he had hit the school and what if...

Run beyond TBO (AKA, I really want this plane)

I was assuming he could get a couple of hundred hours out of the engine before overhaul. IIRC an overhaul is about $15K.

Run beyond TBO (AKA, I really want this plane)

Nick, that price is certainly attractive. However, my experience owning a plane has taught me that purchase price is a small part of the equation compared to operating costs (especially maintenance). Make sure there isn't another reason the price is so cheap. FWIW, I got a pretty good deal...

Out of currency -- need a CFII to get current?

As someone who was nearly killed by a "wannabe" instructor I wholeheartedly agree with Ron's point. You want someone in the right seat who not only knows how to fly, but knows how to divide attention between watching the pilot and looking outside the window.

    Is this correct?

The example Brown gives is for an aircraft that has already made initial contact. Since VFR flight following is about the lengthiest request you can make, it pays to make sure they are ready to handle you before committing 20 seconds of airtime to it. I can't tell you how many times I've...

    Updraft causing airspeed increase?

Flat terrain, but there was a bit of wind shear going on. Pressure had raised from 29.75 to 30.27 in just over 24 hours.

    Updraft causing airspeed increase?

I was flying along in some relatively bumpy conditions today and saw a phenomenon I'd never seen before. I was flying "straight and level", but suddenly my airspeed shot up about 10 knots. My engine didn't suddenly get stronger and the RPMs were in the same place. Is it possible that I hit...
