    Roger, Wilco Over and Out...

    I think one time Roger is appropriate is acknowledging an altimeter setting after a handoff. "N12345, Poburg Approach, Poburg altimeter 2999" "N12345 Roger". There's no requirement to readback the setting, you're not complying with a direction, but the controller wants to know you heard her.

    We're all instrument students...even after many years with the ticket :) Congratulations, you are on the next step of a fun journey. +1 to getting as much actual as you can. And a home sim, even a simple one, can be super helpful in learning procedures etc.

    If you're coming from the Boston area, +1 to FRG. I do it regularly and park at Sheltair. They'll give you a ride to the LIRR, then it's about 50m into Penn Station ($9.50 off-peak one way). $15/night tiedown. HPN is a decent alternative, but costs a bit more to overnight and a bit further...

    Too Much Flying???

    It's easy to get dehydrated too, which makes you more tired (see e.g., this). I carry a bottle on any flights over an hour. A quick drink about 15-20 mins out from the destination can perk me up for the approach.
