Advice: Flying through O’Hare Bravo VFR

    Busiest Non-Towered Airports?

Speaking of Illinois airports, LOT (Lewis University) is a madhouse weekdays at around 8 AM, and every two to three hours after.. In southern Illinois, Pickneyville used to be very busy (SIU flight students use this airport), but nowhere near the 7-8 planes you’d see in LOT’s pattern.

Is Squawk Shoppe still in business?

Shame he’s out of business. I bought one of his ANR headsets, it was comparable to a DC ANR, but at almost half the cost at the time. Got a cool camouflage design to go with it too. As for the headset, it was comfortable and felt a bit lighter than my original DC. Sure, it’s not a Bose. But...

    Descend at your Discretion

Wow, talk about having a bad day. I'm pretty sure that was a career ender. If I am talking to a VFR aircraft that is flying in conflict with any other aircraft, I will issue traffic. If not in sight, I typically issue one more call and advise "target appears likely to merge." If still not in...

    SOCAL the busiest

Of the ten facilities on that list, only four are not “consolidated” TRACON’s. See if you can guess which are which.

    Radio comms into KLOU

VFR movements are not counted the same as IFR movements in a radar environment. When we ask pilots to request flight following, we aren’t doing it for a traffic count. We are doing it to help alleviate the close calls many VFR pilots aren’t aware they are part of.

    IFR direct over Chicago...

    IFR direct over Chicago...

As well you shouldn't. The key is, if you are operating with ATC, communicate your intentions as soon as possible. If I know what you need to do, I can implement a plan to let you do so while keeping Grandma Sue's* airliner out of your grill. Please understand that while my weather radar might...

    IFR direct over Chicago...

I would much rather talk to an aircraft in my airspace, I don't care if the aircraft is VFR or IFR. If you want to remain IFR, plan on 16k or above. Or, if the weather is VFR, cancel, go around bravo, and reactivate IFR on the other side of the bravo. This is probably the easiest way around...

    "Climb Via" Question

This sounds like a localized issue. Knowing the airport and procedure name would help. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Do some controllers use "Oxford" instead of "Oscar"?

    Controllers...what are your pet peeves?

"Approach, what's our sequence?" Or "Approach, how long is the final?" Dude, just tell me you're minimum fuel already. That, and not paying attention on frequency. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Sleep and high controllers?

I'm confused. Even our single staffed towers (FAA and FCT) have procedures in place should the single controller have to depart for a biological. Usually it amounted to calling the overlying radar facility to inform that controller of the departure. A subsequent return call returns operations to...

    Tower: "Take down this number"

I don't think there is any wake turbulence separation minima between a Citation and a Skyhawk. Both aircraft are considered "small" when it comes to wake. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Privatize ATC?

"Privatization" legislation has already been proposed. http://transportation.house.gov/airr-act/ HR 4441 was introduced in the 114th Congress. Remains in committee limbo. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Pilots...what are your pet peeves?

Most of the time, I'm observing your flight track and altitude readout in relation to the other observed traffic traversing my sector. Most of the time, when a pilot advises they are climbing or descending my response is "roger, maintain VFR" but I already have observed what they are doing...

    Proper vertical separation at FL180
