Reference of G1000 features vs software version?

Can anyone help me find a reference source where I can identify which features are present on a G1000 given a specific unit software version? I am interested in tracking the various aircraft capabilities at my club. I have downloaded the Garmin airframe_info.xml files which tell me installed...

    New YouTube Channel

Great that you are putting just this kind of thought into it! Another way of saying my point is that, as with any art, the music (if any) should be a background component* that enhances, not distracts nor obscures the primary focus, which in this case is the flying. The vids that drive me batty...

    New YouTube Channel

Yep - you have to do all that editing work so the viewer doesn’t have to! We are all such entertainment consumers these days we tend to take that for granted.

Please, oh please don’t try to make them into music videos! ATC audio all the way!

Student pilot going to San Fran

“Bay Tour”, yes. This is the ATC terminology for flying scenic around SF and Oakland. A pacific coast flight is also scenic, and less pilot work, subject to the same constraints in next paragraph. As already mentioned, consider the weather. If the summer fog doesn’t lift, your view doesn’t...

Anybody have any advice on how to deal with a hoarder?

I unfortunately can’t offer simple suggestions in a forum post. The reason the profession exists is because it is a process which is typically non-trivial. Alas, an opportunity for an aviation analogy to illustrate (no intention of being cheeky here): OP: I got an airplane. Can anyone give me...

Anybody have any advice on how to deal with a hoarder?

I applaud you for your concern and wanting to help. Hoarding can be a legit disorder and is currently categorized in the obsessive compulsive disorder grouping. You will probably have a feel for whether she is just thrifty or if she seems off by whether it controls her rather than the other way...

    Ground Instruction Question

I say get clarity what they are referring to by ground instruction. There are basically 3 kinds of ground: one on one, commonly part of a flight lesson before after flight; group, which costs the school less to do several students at once, but will be like school where they target the average...

Estate Planning - What to do with the Airplane?

Not that this was meant as a serious suggestion, but I’d just note that it would be a bit hard for him to set a timer after having just been killed by a beer truck. That doesn’t even consider the discomfort people flying his plane might feel having a timed bomb attached to it. The idea needs...

    PBOR2 .. cleared for takeoff?!

There has been a possibly significant event. PBOR2 has just been co-sponsored by senator Kelly Ayotte who happens to be the aviation subcommittee chair. From what I understand, that matters, since she is the one who puts it on the agenda.

Any operational benefits from ADS-B out yet?

I visited NorCal TRACON a couple of weeks ago and one of the other guests asked the controllers what ADS-B meant to them. This is just one senior controller's answer, but he said they just kept it disabled for now because almost nobody important (heavy metal) had it yet. He could only name one...

    PBOR2 .. cleared for takeoff?!

Nope. "Once approved, no further AME visit or FAA certification would be required." If he got the class-III 40 years earlier while a kid, that's enough, as long as it occurred no earlier than ten years prior to the bill being enacted. You wouldn't need a new medical every ten years.

    PBOR2 .. cleared for takeoff?!

Because you are only thinking in the present. Young pilots now will eventually be old pilots. As old pilots, they will not be required to pass a third class medical exam again as long as they were healthy once upon a time even if they have developed conditions that would disqualify a new pilot...

    PBOR2 .. cleared for takeoff?!

"3) Any pilot who has not held a valid medical certificate within the past ten years or new pilots would be required to obtain a one-time 3rd class medical or special issuance to establish a health baseline. Once approved, no further AME visit or FAA certification would be required." Weird...

Do glider pilots have the best stick and rudder skills?

In a glider, yes. We train it for rope break scenarios as long as you have 200ft or so of air under you. This is where low airspeed and sink rate are exploited as compared to motorcraft. But that is an equipment question rather than about pilot skills.

    PBOR2 .. cleared for takeoff?!

^^^ refers to "the version that was first proposed" and is almost certainly not the form the bill will have if passed. Behind the scenes, the wording has been negotiated and changed substantially as evident in the Machin-Boozman amendment. It has been heavily watered down since February. ---...

    PBOR2 .. cleared for takeoff?!

What does PBOR2 even look like at this point? What version are these legislators co-sponsoring? Is it the version we saw in the Manchin-Boozman amendment? For all we know, it is so watered down as to offer hardly any change at all. It certainly isn't the version that was first proposed.

Do glider pilots have the best stick and rudder skills?

I started on gliders and got as far as soloing. I'm about to finish my PPL in ASEL. I would say soaring accelerated my grasp of pitch controlling airspeed and substantially enriched my understanding of air currents particularly in mountain environments which I believe really valuable. As for...

FAA Starts Beta Testing App That Tells Drone Pilots Where They Are Allowed To Fly

If they can be flown in hazardous proximity, they will. Start requiring they be built with GPS geofencing and just make them unable to fly in controlled airpace. It will cost more but solve a gargantuan headache and that will get cheaper over time. Sure someone will hack it, but that requires...
