Taxiway closed by notam due to snow/ice

The airport I am based at has closed the taxiway to the hangars, I assume due to snow and ice, maybe 2-3 inches. I am not concerned about the safety aspect of it as I have plenty of experience dealing with it, summary is go slow and plan ahead. Runway is open, tower is open. I need to go...

tractor repair question - since you guys are pretty smart

First of all I know what I am about to propose is not the "right" way to do this. Have a small 22 HP Kioti tractor and the engine frame/transmission is leaking between the component pieces. I had my internal guys repair a broken shifting mechanism and I am guessing they did not put a new seal...

    TSA delays......

Had to fly with the peasants and unwashed masses today and American (still sucks) sent me email saying TSA was experiencing delays and to arrive 2 hours early....I compromised at 1:30 early.....by golly the line was backed up and they only had one lane open....I am precheck so I zipped through...

Wild-Looking ‘Open Rotor’ Engine Could Cut Airliner Emissions by a Massive 20 Percent (msn.com) Something similar was done 20-30 years ago?

Web lead forensics and identifying potential customers

I own a small company with several web sites. I was approached by a company called lead forensics where they can identify, to a certain level when someone, at the IP company level, looks at your websites, how much time they spend, and some other useful metrics. Unfortunately you can't identify...

Cylinders 5-3-1 didn't start right away

Went to fly my ovation (IO-550) today and on start up, above cylinders didn't fire.....worked throttle and mixture in and out a bit and eventually they came alive.....didn't go flying. Evidenced by a roughness and no EGT rise. I did do a high power run up and that was normal. Called my...

    Ignition lead repair

i was removing my Mags for the 500 service and I accidentally broke off one of the leads inside the mags. Is it possible to just repair one lead? Or are the economics that bad? Engine is IO-550

Why two alttitudes on missed approach

the missed approach instructions at OFP GPS 34 have instructions to climb to 700 then climb to 2000, with no instructions between them. Why not just make it climb to 2000 in one instruction? Just something I noticed while flying in there yesterday

American Eagle flight diverts to GA Podunk airport

Surprised I am the first to post this. Don't know how this got so screwed up that poteau Ok ended up being an alternate. http://5newsonline.com/2016/06/12/american-airlines-plane-heading-to-xna-diverted-to-poteau/

Ductless heating/cooling solutions and your opinions

I am in the middle of remodeling my 1911 town house in Richmond VA and one of the big projects is the cooling system. The plan was when I redid the rooms on the back house half of the house to install a small mini split for the kitchen and the upstairs bedroom above kitchen, about 350 sq feet...

    Oil temperature wonky

I have a 2000 Mooney ovation with the 310 HP upgrade and the ship oil temperature is starting to act up. Started a couple of days ago the Moritz ship gauge went though the red line but the JPI showed a normal temperature of 180 or so. Aborted the trip, talked with mechanic and he said most...

Another perspective on the red safety handle in Cirrus

I have been reading a lot about the safety benefit of the Red Handle but I am always interested in costs of things. So I did a quick and dirty analysis, Cirrus has sold about 6000 airplanes over the past 16 years. There is an installed cost of this system which I guessed at about $25,000, if...

Worst FBO you have been to....

I usually don't start nonsense threads like this as I have a lot to do. Problem with nice FBO's is anything above clean and quiet is a bonus, too much and it is just extravagant. Unfortunately I don't have a lot to add as I don't travel like I used to.

Metal non ferrous flake in filter

Did the first oil change on my new to me plane and the filter had 2 tiny flakes in with a total size of 1/8" by 1/8" for both pieces, very very thin. Engine is a IO-550 with about 400 SMOH. Sending oil off to analysis, mechanic said it shouldn't be doing that with this low time of engine, but...

    Rasberry Pi and machine monitoring

I have a small factory and I have about 10 machines (riveting, bending, punching, pressing) that I would like to monitor for cycles per shift. My machine integrator says this could be done with with Rasberry Pi machines. All I would want to do it record a time/date stamp each time the operator...

    Windshield polishing

Has anybody done this? I have seen the repair kits, but curious about real world experiences. I currently have pretty clean glass, but some scratches that can be seen and interfere with vision just a tiny bit. What I don't want to do is F it up and make it worse.

Ipad Air2 and Stratus2S and Foreflight

So I bought the new Ipad Air2 because I bought a Stratus 2S. Will leave the discussions and endless forced upgrades to another discussion. My issue is battery life while running the Stratus 2S and FF, it is terrible. It is depleting about 20% to 25% per hour. I think that is terrible, saw...
