Commercial pilot requirement question about the long cross country

Because whom-ever at the FAA that wrote this requirement is retarded. It is a worthless requirement, except perhaps as a bladder holding and excessive fuel-burning exercise.

    Garmin 430 Approach Activation question

A good work-a-round for the "VTF" deletion of waypoints outside the FAF is to load the full approach, then highlight and activate only the leg to the FAF. That's the segment you'll be vectored onto by ATC and you'll still be able to see all the fixes.

Optimal timing for BATD hours during IFR rating

Focus Scanning and procedural practice. Most issues are the result of a faulty scan.

    WAKE avoidance during instrument approaches

In IMC, you'll get more separation from traffic and wake-turbulence generally wouldn't be an issue.

How good or bad were you in early instrument training?

Don't beat yourself up. A lot of pilots have difficulty learning instrument technique and most deviations are either the result of a faulty instrument scan, or unconscious over-controlling. I've seen a lot of this in the last ten years I've been doing instrument programs. If you can find a...

How would you circle on this approach?

Circling West is out, so you would need to cross the runway and enter a left downwind circle for 19 or a right downwind circle for 1.

    Filing /G

Doesn't have to change anything, just gives you more flight planning flexibility and more instrument approach options.

    Cancelling IFR... ON TIME

I get a lot of "short window" void times. That's why I'm usually run-up and at the hold-short line when I make the call to ATC (no tower or GCO, so I use my cell phone).

    Can I shoot a VOR / DME-A approach without a VOR?

GPS may be used as a legal substitute for DME and an NDB (fix). GPS is not approved as a substitute for VOR (even if is may be more accurate, but this is debatable). The only case where GPS may be used as the primary means of navigation on a non-GPS approach, is where there is a published GPS...

    Changing CFI after checkride failure

No real pitfalls. Take him/her on a flight. Observe his/her flying skills. Remediate him/her on the appropriate task(s). Put him through you own version of a mock checkride. If he/she does well, sign off. The part I don't understand is how he/she managed to fail the oral. Remember that...

Bold line on RNAV vs ILS

Feeder routes take you to an IAF.

Bold line on RNAV vs ILS

Rock science this is not. He should have flown his clearance. Is there anyone here whose CFII told a student to do WETF he wanted to do instead of the clearance he got from ATC? I think not. It's all on him. Read back the clearance, get your release, depart, and contact departure.

    Instrument Scan with 1 or 2 G5s?

G5 PFD works fine. I purchased a G5 HSI, but after using one in a friends plane with a 650,I sent it back to Spruce and hung onto my current DG.

    Instrument Scan with 1 or 2 G5s?

I have the same thoughts with the G5s. They're only certified replacements for the AI and DG/HSI and I use them just like you. I don't scan the tapes (but I do set the bugs) and still rely on the "Steam" ASI/ALT/TC and VSI since they are much easier to quickly interpret, not to mention...

    Miscellaneous IFR questions

--- No compelling reasons if a standard instrument approach is unavailable, but I have requested a couple in the last decade, only in areas where I was very familiar with the area.

G5 to get TAS and other goodies like wind data

GNS430/530 units can do it too. Occasionally ATC will ask for winds aloft and it takes like 3 inputs and voila'

    Cloud Questions

True, but ice crystal are really only an issue in the Flight levels and upper troposphere, not generally were we fly our pedestrian GA planes. What we worry about is clearing, that accumulates quickly from SLD precipitation. I've encountered some light rime a couple of times and both instances...
