    E6B vs AirNav

The computer tools will always give great circle courses, slightly different than courses plotted on a sectional (plotted and measured with a plotter, not an E6B. The error you site seems too high, however. FWIW, I love the E6B. Work through the sample problems in the book that comes with it a...

PHAK, AIM, and CFR enough for PPL test

It seems like all of the basics for the PPL test are covered in the Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge and the AIM. Reviewing the regs in the CFR is a good idea, IMO. The test questions are available online on sites such as exams 4 pilots. I am self motivated and have a good...

GA Airplane Shipments Up for 2012

Agreed. It is hard to get excited about 13 more planes for $100 mil less year over year. Interesting stats, though. It's hard to believe so few planes are made. Aircraft owners are a small, fortunate group. Eric

    Wine selection as a gift

Mike, I have always had good luck asking for suggestions from wine merchants. Just tell them what you want. "I want a cab for about $20." Or whatever your budget is. They should know their product and satisfied customers are more likely to come back. Eric PS I am a wine snob :)

    Suggestions for enjoyable discovery flight

None of the planes at the nearby FBO are aerobatic. Hopefully just having the controls will be enough on the first flight. I suggested that she wait a bit for that thrill. For the record, the barrel rolls were my request. I asked the pilot what he liked to do. He told me, aerobatic flying...

    Suggestions for enjoyable discovery flight

Funny you should say that. My wife was a gymnast. One of her first questions about flying was,"Can I learn to do 'flips'?"

    Suggestions for enjoyable discovery flight

I have the flying bug. A friend arranged a flight for a group of us several years ago. I was taken up in a Globe Swift, I think. The pilot let me take the controls for a couple minutes. A couple barrel rolls later, I was ready to learn to fly. I work full time. My wife has time and has...
