IFR en route, VFR departure and landing

Has there ever been consideration of a middle ground IFR rating that would allow instrument privileges en route but not require them for approach and landing? It seems to me that the skills and experience required for en route, cross-country flying are different (and more forgiving) than...

    South Dakota or western Iowa

Greetings to all, especially those based in or familiar with South Dakota or western Iowa. In a few days I'm flying from Seattle/BFI to east-central Illinois (C16/Frasca). With prevailing westerlies, flight time in my C182 will be 11-12 hr. There will be an overnight stop, and 6-8 hr on day 1...

    Flight following etiquette

VFR, getting radar advisories. When not in special use airspace, I suspect I am not obligated to inform ATC of altitude change or modified route--although I would always do so as a courtesy. But what about these circumstances? Is there a requirement to inform ATC or to follow ATC vectors etc...

    Photos

Can't help posting two shots I took recently. Mt. St. Helens/Mt. Rainier photographed 3 days ago; Missouri River near sunset (in western S. Datota, I think) a little less than 2 weeks ago. Hunter
