Aerobatic plane that I can crop dust with?

Michflyer, What you're looking for doesn't;t actually exist, mainly due to the aforementioned change up between standard and restricted categories. You could get an Ag Cat or Stearman in restricted category, and they'll do basic level acro just fine, but it's not legal, but that may not matter...

Anyone with experience in a 450 Stearman?

Own a stock (220) Stearman, given a lot of dual in 450s, and currently flying a R-1340 powered duster Stearman. They all fly about the same, the difference is during the landing profile, you don't have to carry extra speed, just keep the nose down. Its just a Stearman. You might get a little...

I want to fly a tailwheel!!

Elkton Flying Club has a J-3 Cub and a grass strip for instruction and solo checkout. It's about 30 minutes north of Clarksville, TN. Nice folks and cheap rentals in a rural setting, doesn't get much better. www.elktonflyingclub.com Mike-

Piper Cub flying lesson at Red Stewart Airfield

Not to stir a pot, but those are two mantras (along with "any landing you can walk away from is a good one") that make me crazy. It's the silliest thing I've ever heard in aviation. When pilots say things like that it sounds like a crutch for pilot error. mechanical failures aside, ground...

    Solo aerobatics in Yak

I was in the SEAL Teams with Brandon. I cut my warbird formation and acro teeth on a T-34 I was partners in at Gillespie. Did a lot of flying with some local CJ guys out of Ramona too. That was about 15 years a go. Good times. Mike-

    Aero question concerning pilot size

250lbs is about the max you're going to fit in a Stearman, and even that's going to be tight. Plus, you'll have to carry next to no fuel and a light instructor to be able to do any aerobatics. if you find a 450 Stearman it'll carry more, but you won't be able to (legally) fit more in it. Mike-

    Decathalon/Citabria Toe -In

After removing the wheel pants from my Super Decathalon today I noticed what looks like a noticeable toe-out. I've seen it before on other American Champion products but can't remember if it's by design or not. There's no noticeable wear on the tires from it, but it doesn't do a lot fo pattern...

    Pitts or Citabria/Decathlon

I'll jump in on the "dead post" with Whiff; first as for Pitts landings being interesting, this comment makes me nutty, "interesting or squirrelly" is always used by pilots who have trouble precisely flying whatever they're in. a 65HP J-3 will bite you just the same as a Pitts, it just happens...

    Duh... with a video (Waco)

Ernie, Cool video, I was just up yesterday practicing slow rolls exclusively, finished up outing them into outside Cubans. The good thing about big biplanes and acro is when most other planes run out of energy to roll upright at the top of a loop or similar, those big wings still have enough...

    Best taildragger for training

I've done a few tailwheel endorsements for pilots who close to finishing their RVs. I've had the option of teaching them in a C-140, J-3, oleo'd gear 7DC, and a 69' Citabria 7ECA with spring gear. The 7ECA we used even had the O-235 C1 engine of 108HP and it pulled two big guys just fine around...

    450 Stearman Acro History

FlyMach, Wish I would've known any of the Cole memorabilia was for sale. I'm a huge Cole family fan. My father helped co-found the National Stearman fly-in at Galesburg, IL in 1972 with the Stearman I now own, so of course the Coles' had a big impact on those of us fortunate enough to grow up...

    Tail wheel training

You must be flying the CAF's PT-19? Didn't know they were doing instruction now too. For a primary trainer, the PT-19 the easiest of all to land (Stearman, PT-22, etc). That trailing link gear makes it pretty much a breeze if you keep it straight. Nice and heavy too. In fact, it might spoil you...

What airshow acts should i excited for?

Whifferdill, I've talked to John at a couple of Stearman gatherings, it's obvious that his performances are results of THOUSANDS of hours and 30 years in that very airplane. I put he and Sean Tucker in the same category as performers who would put on a stunning show in anything they flew...

What airshow acts should i excited for?

Unfortunately, Julie has been flying the exact same act for over 20 years, never changes. If a male pilot were flying the same act it wouldn't be a Barber award winner. As a stock Stearman pilot doing IAC sportsman-level aerobatics, I'm still mystified at what John Mohr makes his Stearman do...

Want to become an air show performer but hate rollercoasters?

I've never seen any roller coasters at airshows...so you should probably be ok. Plus, most roller coasters are assembled and operated by dope smokers right? (or was that ferris wheels?) Aviation not so much. I hate heights and ladders but it never seemed to affect my flying. Although....maybe...

    Hammerheads

Hammer heads are tough in a stock Stearman, almost no time to get established on the up line, probably worse than a 7ECA when the 3,000lbs starts uphill. Agreed, a work of art when someone nails it. Mike-
