    Newark Approach Moving to Philly?

N90 is sitting between 50 and 60% staffed. There has been a long history of it being difficult to staff for a number of reasons. The NY metroplex is one of if not the most complex airspace on the planet. That brings with it a certain bravado among the certified controllers who run it. Trainees...

    Walmart drones are here.

Completely agree. they aren’t trying to replace your weekly grocery run. They are trying to replace your Amazon order for one thing. And yes, Amazon has everything under the sun but in large urban areas where they do one day / same day delivery they stock a much smaller set of high demand...

    Walmart drones are here.

Devils advocate: Quite a few consumers and Wal Mart would disagree. The big stores, Walmart, Target, etc. lost a ton of business to Amazon. “I need this thing but two day delivery is fine, and shipping is free, I’ll just order it.” They started clawing back some of that business with the...

I Interned in Congress for the creation the most recent FAA Bill...

Lobbyists job is to get what they want in the bill, teaching someone might be a logical way to do that, but lets not confuse logic with politics.

I Interned in Congress for the creation the most recent FAA Bill...

People should be more concerned with this version that actually proceeded from the house to the senate and will likely be the basis of the actual reauthorization bill. https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/3935?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22hr+3935%22%5D%7D&s=2&r=1 The problem...

Hot Air Balloon Crash in Eloy, AZ

It's a good question. There is almost certainly video of what happened. The pilot, Cornelius, normally had a 360 camera attached to the basket, which if it survived should have pretty conclusive evidence. Plus between 8 skydivers there should be at least 6 cameras... I'm not commercially rated...

Hot Air Balloon Crash in Eloy, AZ

The balloon pilot was a very well known jumper and balloon pilot who did this all the time. Terrible to hear and a lot of the grapevine is saying all of the passengers who perished were also skydivers that did not wear a rig, but went as ballast for the jumpers. I think having passengers is...

DTO Tower Controller and Pilot Argue On-the-Air

Contract towers are run by corporations on behalf of the government so the controllers there are not federal employees. DTO is run by a company called RVA. Further complicating it, DTO controllers are members of the controllers union, NATCA - which is not the case at every contract tower. I...

Got ‘em on the Fish Finder

I'd complain on account of there being two planes in this equation, and the other aircraft might not appreciate the rough equivalency. Nor would I wish a few sleepless nights on a controller who thought they did their job right and ended up watching two datatags disappear. If you're going to...

    Coordination between facilities

Those likely go to call boxes/phones at or near those rooms (also its likely Engineering room) so that people at the door can be buzzed in or support staff can report on issues. Echo the above - automation handles 90% of handoffs. Radar controller initiates a handoff to the next sector and it...

    Coordination between facilities

The communications panel that controllers use to select frequencies is configured that half the panel is frequencies (where they can select transmit and / or receive) and the other half is "phone" lines that they press to call another position. This can be inside the facility to the next sector...

    Osprey crash in Japan

Not sure if this is just the party line being towed, but some drivers have mentioned it's record is as safe as most helicopters. Being a bigger aircraft it tends to have more people onboard it though and it has the spotlight. They also went through (are going through?) some engine longevity...

    Hang gliding for first time

In skydive tech there was one guy/small manufacturer who had developed something called "airlock" to prevent collapses but it didn't really catch on. Something similar? https://www.bigairsportz.com/airlocks.php

Two bizjets go bump in Houston

The ASDE-X should also have been shouting at the controllers.

    Remote towers - doomed?

Getting folks out of downtown to Leesburg is something that sounds easy and is a lot less likely to happen in practice - sure they can get people out there occasionally but not on a daily basis. The Tech Center is an entire facility of FAA people (and contractors) wandering around and working on...

    Remote towers - doomed?

I've seen it all done overseas including vehicle and wildlife monitoring for runways as well. Getting the FAA's controller tools to that point is so far away it is laughable. Electronic flight strips are still slowly rolling out to the big towers. Follow the green lighting, stop bars, arrival...

    Remote towers - doomed?

Atlantic City is where the FAA's Tech Center is. There's a chance Frequentis will be successful that way, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The Tech Center is another black hole of good ideas. At least at the TC, there will be easy access to FAA folks (as opposed to Leesburg and Colorado).

    Remote towers - doomed?

We have had some camera feeds in cabs for some time, but yes, a mast with multiple cameras and these capabilities is even more valuable.
