Well I did ATC at MCAS Miramar SD and the controllers that work on the carrier also worked at NAS North Island. They called over and asked if we wanted to check out ATC ops on ship (CATCC) during work ups for deployment. Flew out on the C-2 and spent a couple of days. Wish I would’ve gone on the...

Border security helo down with fatalities 3/10/2024

Not sure why we’re talking about random aerodynamic helicopter features. So a video of a rotor blade constantly changing pitch means they’re dangerous? There’s not even that much stresss involved. The rotating swash plate is spinning around the non rotating. The PC links are just along for the...

Border security helo down with fatalities 3/10/2024

Well if they were commercial rides, heli accident rates are roughly half that of non-commercial fixedwing. Most people on POA engage in non-comm fixedwing on a regular basis.

I’ve always been a fan of autos to the ground but that’s based on single engine aircraft. Still think the Army should’ve gone with a cheap single turbine like the Navy’s TH-73. Oh well. In twins, I just think the chances are pretty remote for dual engine failure to warrant the training risk...

Border security helo down with fatalities 3/10/2024

When I was in Iraq we had a Black Hawk crash while doing high hover training. All they had was an engine chip light but they pulled off the engine at a high hover. They didn’t even think about the fact they weren’t in a SE envelope. OGE, heavy and hot, she ain’t gonna maintain a hover in those...

SWP, LTE, engine / trans failure. Heck, could’ve shutoff the wrong engine and not have been in SE envelope. That’s happened before. RIP. Not sure about the SE performance in Lakota but you could go all the way down to around 100 ft hover in a Black Hawk and fly out of it. Below that, you’re...

    Osprey crash in Japan

Bell / Boeing product but I think it’s mostly Bell. Sitting on the ramp for three months didn’t do those airframes any good. Hopefully they were doing weekly run ups and cycling the systems.

Man who crashed snowmobile into a parked Black Hawk helicopter suing government for $9.5M

Well the Army has a similar statement “Before beginning a flight the aircrew will acquaint themselves with mission, procedures, and rules.” Unless it conflicts with any reg or policy, they are bound by the FAA CFRs as well. Violations of which are to be reported to the FAA.

    MOA NOR*

B-1s used to do some of the best attacks during our semi annual MOAs. Crappy pics but I took them standing on the balcony at the barracks.

Speaking of security, or lack there of. In the desert they fly doors off a lot. You could have an entire company of Black Hawks sitting on the ramp with cockpit doors removed. No need to lock the doors in that case.

No idea. Never heard of a fighter using a key though.

They’re unlocked. The keys are usually with the log book / computer. Crew chief signs that out and gives the keys to the PIC. Generally they’re only locked when away from base over night somewhere.
