Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024

I am required to work that day because of the eclipse, and am located in the path of totality in Indiana. I would prefer to fly to somewhere with more reliable weather like Texas to see it, but Indiana will have to do. KHNB and KFRH are two nearby airports in totality here. I wonder if the...

If GA is getting less popular and there are less new pilots why is the price of old planes not falling?

My community hangar rent has gone from $100/month to $140/month in the past 2 years. And I’m sure that’s a bargain compared to others here, but geez that’s a 40% increase. I’m sure everything else has gone up too, but so far I’ve done all the work and inspections myself that I’m allowed to do...

    6Y9 2023 Fly in/camp out

Yep we’re neighbors of sorts. I‘m based at KHNB, not far from Evansville. I trained out of I91 at Boonville years ago. I figure if I can fly in and out of there, I should be able to do 6Y9 too.

Announcing on CTAF 15 miles out - why is this a thing?

I’ve always called at 5 miles out, flying around C172 speeds.

    6Y9 2023 Fly in/camp out

What are the chances of actually seeing an aurora at this fly-in? I have never seen one, but southern Indiana is usually too far south. Also I don’t like crowds and I’m nervous about flying so far from home. But I like camping, grass strips, and small towns, so there is that.

Student Pilot Solo Cross Country Overnight?

I echo the ones that say this is between you and your CFI. It’s his neck on the line, and he knows you better than anyone here. If he is comfortable and willing to sign you off, go have fun. The nay sayers here are looking out for your best interest though, it’s the safest option. Er well...

    KRSV leveled last night

I flew up and borrowed the courtesy car one evening last year for dinner. I remember meeting the manager and a shop cat that resided in the maintenance hangar when I was there. I suppose it was a goner if it was still there.

    Make DST permanent!

Much of Indiana used to stay on one time year around - I liked it, but Gov Daniels worked to change it. I would prefer it just to be different from the rest of you all. Being like everyone else isn’t very exciting anyway.

    Reselling N-Numbers as a Business

Haha! Yeah, I just noticed his name was posted already too. I think Sean is hoarding numbers as part of a terrorist plot, better tip off the FBI…

    Reselling N-Numbers as a Business

Someone should post who owns short-n-numbers. Then some concerned pilots should go “convince” the owner to knock it off. Ah the good old days of vigilante justice…

I need a new ELT, which one do I get?

I ended up getting an Artex 345 rather than the ACK-04 when I was trying to decide which to get. Seems like those are the two most popular I was reading about. I didn't like that the ack has three different batteries I had to document and remember to replace, whereas the artex just has one...

I ended up "woke" by default today

I don’t know what Juneteenth is other than the explanation posted above, I don’t get that day off, and it’s not in my calendar. Maybe the next one will have it huh? I’m not sure if having another holiday is actually worthwhile for whatever we are honoring. I can’t keep tract of all the...

    Density Altitude and human performance

Humidity as well as temperature affects density altitude correct? Isn’t humid air less dense because some air molecules are displaced by water - so wouldn’t that cause a corresponding effect on human performance, since each breath of air would have less “air” in it? If there was some impact it...

    Fly and Bike

Just got back from taking my montague allston folding bike to I72 in the rans s21. Cool grass strip very close to the Monon trail, made it all the way to downtown Indy. They also have loaner bikes there fyi. So far have also done Cardinal greenway near MZZ, another section of the Cardinal via...

Flight following - not sure why I didn't use it before

I'm a podunk country vfr only guy and fly out of a non-atc controlled airport. Mainly because of that I've conditioned myself not to use ATC unless necessary. I'm not "frightened" of talking with controllers, probably apprehensive is a better term. I can do it if I need to, but it's not what...

    Muncie Indiana (KMIE)

I flew in there once but my family member who lives in Muncie gave a poor review of the restaurant so I did not try it. He did say it used to be better in the past but had gotten worse. I wish someone would come up with a good way to get from the airport to the nearby cardinal greenway trail...

Not my pic. No news story. Not sharing particulars but it looks like lessons might be learned

I never understood the whole aura around tailwheel planes and pilots. Show me how many nosewheel planes ground loop. The only recent accidents around here I know of are an ag plane hitting wires, and a ground loop. I built my plane and wrestled over which configuration and decided nosewheel...

Flight following - not sure why I didn't use it before

I’ve debated getting FF but just haven’t been able to convince myself to actually do it other than a couple times just for practice. I typically only contact ATC when I want in their airspace. So, I have adsb in and out and targets display on my EFIS right in front of me, so it’s an easy...

    GlaStar down, Waukesha WI

Interesting discussion, stories like this one make me question my own capability in a situation like that, but instill a healthy dose of fear to hopefully avoid it since I’m not instrument rated. But worst case the plane I fly has the blue LVL button on the autopilot control, kind of like a...

    GlaStar down, Waukesha WI

As a VFR pilot I still don’t get this sort of thing. If your plane has an artificial horizon and you get in the clouds, shouldn’t a non instrument rated pilot be able to at least keep it in the air? That’s one instrument telling you everything you really need to know to not die - so it’s not...
