    Cloud Questions

I wouldn’t avoid cumulus entirely unless I had a newbie in the plane or airsickness was a factor. A bumpy ride is a possibility. It’s often worst right below. First rule is, slow down. Now, towering cumulus with a heavy rain shower underneath, might get a second look. Lightning is a hell no...

Seat cushions to improve vision over console

I fly a lot of 12-18 year olds in 182s and 206s. Those have big panels. The first question is always “can you see pavement in front of the plane?” If the answer is no, I keep two firm Goodwill pillows in each plane. I spent less than $3 apiece on those. If you can’t see pavement in front of the...

Got a hand slap from San Carlos tower

So, exactly how should that moving map have helped? There was one in the cockpit. And I *didn't* have a midair incident. Heads down might have changed that. You're solving the wrong problem.

Does stratus care if I am 14 or 28 volts?

There should be a voltage spec somewhere on that. If it allows 28V, it should say so. Many do; cars weren't always 12V either. If it doesn't say, I wouldn't mess with it.

Got a hand slap from San Carlos tower

It was a layer that I had, and it was not a help. You misquoted both me and yourself in one post. That takes talent. A moving map is not helpful in this situation. Knowing where the boundary of Class B shelf was was the issue. All VFR charts show this, whether moving or not. I knew exactly...

Got a hand slap from San Carlos tower

Who says I didn't? Yep, the G1000 told me I was "inside airspace." Which i knew since I was departing Class D. Yup, those moving maps sure make mistakes impossible. Sure helps with avoiding inbound traffic, too.

    Advice on VFR ontop.

It's been pretty well covered, but I won't fly between SFO and PYE on the coast in bright perfect VMC. There is NOWHERE to set down, not even offshore. Big rocks and cliffs. If you survive the ditching, you'll get ripped to shreds by the surf. Not all of it is quite that bad, but it's a LOT...

    IFR with sectionals

I was right. You don't understand it. Let me start. In the context of a moving map, SA means you know where you are. If you already know where you are by just being a competent pilot, nothing adds SA in that context. You cannot know your position to better than 100% certainty. It's a buzzword...

    IFR with sectionals

Under perfect conditions, yes I do. I'll submit there isn't any. I'll also suggest you haven't thought about what that means. Repeating a buzzword while refusing to elaborate is really good evidence that you don't understand the buzzword. It won't actualize your synergy either. First...

    IFR with sectionals

What, exactly, is the SA this adds? No buzzwords. Say what the advantage is. And the poster did not qualify his statement for unfamiliar areas. He said he would not fly.

    IFR with sectionals

But a moving map in perfect conditions with a lot of landmarks around does absolutely nothing for SA. Those are easy -- and really common -- conditions where that particular poster lives. Right now, at his home airport, the METAR is KSCK 301855Z 30008KT 10SM CLR 28/14 A2990 RMK AO2 SLP126...

My engine quit on touchdown tonight (input from Cirrus pilots welcomed)

    Vacuum leak.... or poor timing/ignition.

My engine quit on touchdown tonight (input from Cirrus pilots welcomed)

The one time I suspect this happened to me (high DA, flooded IO360 engine), the engine ran normal RPM and quite smoothly until the roundout. Then, it quit. No problem with any of the electrics, but the engine vapor locked rather quickly and I had to let it cool for an hour to get it restarted.

My engine quit on touchdown tonight (input from Cirrus pilots welcomed)

You wouldn't get low alternator output from that unless the RPM was low.

    IFR with sectionals

Not appropriate to put words in someone else's mouth. He said he would not fly without it. Not that he wouldn't fly cross country. Either way, a pilot who considers a lack of moving map to be a no-go needs training until that's no longer true.
  16. MAKG1

    IFR with sectionals

Not usually. I have most of the airspace memorized, but I couldn't tell you every local frequency and every Class B boundary from memory. Nor is it necessary to do so. Not at all the same thing. Flying cross country without a chart is irresponsible, rather like flying without a checklist. Flying...

Flight Planning. Old school better for me?

Much like instrument proficiency, you have to practice it once in a while, but not necessarily on every flight. You get a lot more anal about the numbers when you're required to have 1 hour reserve at landing and you need to fly around for three hours in the mountains with a heavy load. You...

    IFR with sectionals

Everything in the air is supposed to be covered twice over. And sometimes the MO is a trainee; one of the key tasks of an MP is to train MOs. He said he wouldn't fly without it. Even on a perfect day. If it provides additional SA under that circumstance, he's not a competent pilot.
  19. MAKG1

    IFR with sectionals

Yes, it does. It means you are unable to fly on a perfect day without something telling you what to do. That is, rather precisely, a lesser pilot. The iPad is not PIC. You are. Honestly, if you can't navigate the local terrain in visual conditions without some gadget to tell you where you...

[NA]how far people will go for 1 second hall of fame...[NA]

Well, that's true stupidity. Hint: professional stunt people in the movies don't use live ammunition. I wonder why. I wonder if idiots like that might buy 6PC's Medical Simulator.
