I'm a real pilot now! (Passed PPL Checkride...long!)

Grats! Sounds like a good time.

    A beach picnic

I'm still training, but one of the first trips I hope to make is to TGI. I've never used the airport there, but Tangier island is an awesome, quaint little island with awesome seafood, and lots of shops. The beach is also nice.

    Hours vs Certifications

I wanted to get my IR soon after getting my PPL as well, just because I feel like having more knowledge / experience in IMC would make me a safer pilot. I also want to take an aerobatics course for that same reason. I don't know how long after I get my PPL I will pursue those goals, but there...

Chasing my PPL - Progress Thread...

Glad to read this as well -- been doing stall practice in a WarriorII -- does the Cessna try to spin easier? Ya know, I don't know why, but I'm terrified of stalls. I'm trying to get over it. We spent a good hour last time practicing stalls and recovery, and I'm so timid during the practice...

    iPad vs. Nexus 7

Ooo, I didn't know there was a smaller iPad coming out. Do you guys use devices with 3G while in the cockpit? Do you need an internet connection for these apps to work, or are all the maps, sectionals, etc downloaded beforehand? I was considering an iPad 2, but would prefer a 7" tablet.

    Discovery Flight tomorrow (Saturday)!

Both sound like an awesome time! My discovery flight was in an old 1979 Piper Warrior II and I'm flying that one for my lessons as well. I feel like the "simple" instruments may be easier to learn on. The GPS in that plane is an old Garmin 155. I don't know if that even counts?

Hey all - Newbie just finished third lesson.

That sounds like a blast! We haven't done anything like that yet, and I'm on about lesson #3 too. (4's tonight) We've done lots of pattern work, and a bunch of touch-and-goes. Also, most of the turns, steep turns, stalls, etc, but no ground reference maneuvers yet. I agree, so addicting.

    another pre-flight inspection question

How do you check them during the day? Can you see them from inside the plane, or do you have to leave the master switch and lights turned on, get out of the plane and walk around? Does that put undue strain on the battery? Just wondering -- I have a grand total of 3.9 hours so far, so very...

    How To Lose Weight

I was very concerned about my BP before the medical, which is weight-based in my case. I fall into the obese scale (though imagining myself, a 6'1" guy, at 144 pounds is laughable). I was able to get my medical, thankfully, and beginning flying lessons has been a great motivating factor for...

    Discovery Flight tomorrow (Saturday)!

Have a great time! I just took mine like 6 weeks ago or something, and it was awesome. I haven't looked back since. I got to do all of the taxi-work, 2 take-offs, a couple of normal turns, and a landing! It was a day I'll never forget. What kind of plane will you be in, do you know?

High Blood Pressure and Third Class

I think I may have given the wrong impression -- I'm not quite as bad off as I may seem from the posts. When I was diagnosed with Diabetes it was really a motivating factor for me to turn my life around. It's been well controlled (5.7 A1c now, which is actually high by my standards) with no...

High Blood Pressure and Third Class

If I have a blood pressure reading over the maximum limit (due to "white coat syndrome" -- no diagnosed hypertension), what should I expect after that? My doctor has spoken with me about starting medication, but we haven't started on anything yet. If I were to be over the limit at the time of...

    Diabetes (type 2) and a 3rd Class

I haven't actually had the exam yet -- I spoke with Dr Bruce and he was very helpful. I decided not to use him as the actual examiner just because he's so far away, but am almost regretting that now. I hope I'm not regretting it more AFTER my exam on Tuesday. I'm not even worried about the...

    Diabetes (type 2) and a 3rd Class

Thanks so much. I guess I'll plan on going to see my PCP sometime soon, though I may give it a few more weeks to see if I can get my numbers as low as possible. I know the A1c is supposed to show ~90 day average, but it seems as though maybe it's weighted more in the last month or so. We'll...

    Diabetes (type 2) and a 3rd Class

I've seen quite a bit posted, but figured I'd ask here to see if I could maybe get a more specific answer on my case. I'm a Type 2 diabetic -- I was diagnosed at age 28 about 2 years ago. My A1c was 9.6 at the time, but after 3 and 6 months, it was later recorded at 4.9 and 5.1 respectively...
