Clearance delivery under Class B shelf

I have departed both Hooks and West Houston VFR on a number of occasions and always switch to the Houston Approach after takeoff to pickup FF and Class B clearance enroute back to my destination. Never had any problems. The Houston area controllers are great to work with and very accommodating...

    Easy C-182 Question

Yep, same here. I get anywhere from 125 to 135 on average depending upon altitude, and of course winds on my 77 Q model. I replaced the engine about 100 hours ago and find that the plane meets my mission requirements. Easy to fly, stable, good IFR platform, hauls 4 adults at an acceptable...

Cleared through bravo but not in bravo

If you were cleared through Bravo you are cleared into Bravo. I fly through Houston Class B quite regularly. As you are well aware, it is very busy airspace with Hobby and Intercontinental airports there, along with the other GA airports. Controllers are great there and generally always...

    Loving the Oxygen System!

I purchased a Mountain High portable oxygen system for my C182 last year at Oshkosh. I too like to take advantage of the tailwinds at higher altitudes. For me, I've learned that 8000' and above is oxygen time for me on cross country flights and can definitely tell the difference.

    DFW & Austin Trip Planning

+1 on Austin Exec. I used to go into Bergstrom, but now Austin Exec is my favorite. Better rates and very GA pilot friendly. I also fly to DFW area frequently and almost always get FF. Very friendly controllers who will vector you around to your destination.

Looking for a tablet suction cup mount. Don't want to spend millions

I have a Ram Mount for iPad mini that is suction mounted. Works pretty good, most of the time. I mount it on the windshield just to the left of the glareshield on my C182. The only problem I have is it occasonally falls off. So I now always remove, and remount it before everyflight. However...

    Night flight 4th of July

For me I have done it a couple of times. Pro: You see a lot of different fireworks going on simultaneously. (for me I got to see three different large scale major displays happening from adjacent cities, plus some pretty impressive smaller 'private' events) Con: Fireworks look alot...

    Scary spatial disorientation encounter

Here is the oxygen system I purchased at Oshkosh last year. Price was very competive with other brands and the quality very good. http://www.mhoxygen.com/index.php/portable-constant-flow/xcp Hangs on the back of the front passenger's seat. I use it at night when above 5000 feet, and...

Give Up on Buying Plane, or Dive In?

For me it was life is too short to worry about the small things and to grab hold of what you can while you can that finally got me to buy my 182. I found a really nice 1977 182Q for a reasonable price that fits my budget and purpose. I have flown almost 300 hours over the past two years. It...

    C172 to C182 Transition

Unless you are shooting an approach in a busy airport with a long runway, you don't want your final approach speed more than 80 kts, at which you will take a bit of runway to slow down enough holding the nose off until it settles and you hear the stall warning horn. I practice landings with...

    Netgear Router

Updating a GPS Datacard -- How?

The Jeppesen Skybound G2 USB adapter that programs the 430/530 series is the same one for the 300 XL. Know any friends with a 430/530 that has one of these? They should be able to program your card for you or perhaps loan it to you.

    Zaon Traffic systems

Yes, I get random ghosts at least once on every flight. It can be annoying, but on the opposite side of things, it gets my head outside the cockpit using my Mark I eyeballs. Not a bad thing. If I am IFR, I don't need it since ATC is letting me know about that. I normally get flight...

    back in the left seat

I have the iPad 3 32GB Cellular, and just purchased an iPad mini 32GB Cellular. My previous experience was with an iPad 16GB WiFi only. The iPad 16GB WiFI was sufficient for flying with reasonable cost, using Foreflight software. However, 1) I needed an external GPS antenna connected via...
