Different "feel" of a plane... thoughts?

Today I flew an older model 172 and it was much more sensitive to my control inputs-- I felt like I was flying it and not necessarily the other way around. I'm trying to think of what was different so that I can put it into words, but it really just felt more sensitive. I felt much more "in...

Canceled clearance to land while on final

My instructor and I were on final the other day (at KBED), about 2 miles out (going for a "straight in" approach) when ATC canceled our clearance to land.:yikes: (They wanted a jet to land in front of us). I thought that meant to turn and leave final but my instructor said that they did not tell...

Landed behind 2 F-18s on Friday

I wish I had my camera with me. I was on downwind at PSM and watched 2 F-18's land-- and then I heard them call the Tower and ask if they could take off and land again before I did (the nerve!). Tower ok'd their request and asked me to make a 360 (guess they actually thought I might catch up to...

Any POAers fly out of KUDD or KPSP?

I'm going to be there at the end of April, just wondering if any of "us" are in that area.

Va-- can't wrap my brain around definition

For some reason I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around this: Va is the speed at which the airplane will stall before exceeding its design limit-load factor in turbulent conditions or when the flights controls are suddenly and fully deflected in flight. So this means that the plane will...

Checklist? (And forgive me if this has been covered)

I'm sure this has been asked before (although I just did a search and didn't come up with a thread). My question is: Do you always use a checklist-- not for pre-flight and run-up, but for cruise & pre-descent (and not just GUMPS, but pullilng out the actual checklist and going over it)...

    Cleared thru Class Bravo!

I was cleared to fly thru Class Bravo today! :) I flew over BOS to 1B9. Today was a day for amazing views... thought I'd share some of the pictures. I flew over the Pats Stadium too, I think I attached that pic as well. Thanks for looking... what fun that was...

    Ipad in the cockpit

In my efforts to begin to familiarize myself with what is available on the Ipad for use in the cockpit, I was wondering what everyone's top 3 apps are--apps that you've really come to rely on and would not like to do without. And thanks!

New PTS standards, in effect 6/2012

I haven't had a chance to go over it (yet), but I wonder if the new standards are tougher than the current ones. http://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/airmen/test_standards/pilot/media/FAA-S-8081-14B.pdf

Pressure on both rudders at same time

Hi Everyone... I was on a flight yesterday that had moderate chop and my instructor suggested putting pressure on both rudders at the same time. He said that this was for comfort as well as to prevent excessive yawing. He said that his worry in moderate to severe chop is that the plane would...

CAT-- is this an issue in the GA community?

(Clear air turbulence). It's something that worries me for when I do my first xc on my own. Or is this something that's generally seen more at the Flight levels?

How can I go back and listen to radio calls?

I know that I go to liveatc.net, but how do I listen to a radio call from a few hours ago (yes, I'm curious what my calls sound like).

Failed engine on a night flight...

I'm going on my first night flight tonight and my instructor said that the thing about night flights is that if you have an engine failure and need to do an emergency landing, you can't really see any fields, so you're kind of hosed, but do your best. This wasn't a very comforting thought. I...

Landing on a fwy- with or against traffic?

I was driving on 95 today, noting how it's so nice and wide and smooth and I was thinking about emergency landings. If an emergency landing had to be made on a freeway, would you land with or against traffic? If this is common knowledge already, I apologize for posting it. But in any event...

    Funny picture.. hopefully this worked

Someone sent me this today, perhaps all of you have already seen it, but I thought it was funny. The title is "Take your kid to work Day."

Jesse- was it you that mentioned the Skew-T's?

Don't those only take readings 2x a day? If that's the case- why do you find them more helpful? (This question sounds as if I'm disagreeing with you-- if it was indeed you that said this! For the record, I'm not, I'm trying to learn and see another way of getting wind info). Thanks...

    Lost engine training

If I were to lose an engine-- for real-- the prop would stop (as opposed to training), correct? So my question is-- would it be very different to glide a plane that does not have a moving prop?

Why no soft field instructions in POH?

Hello again everyone... My instructor and I were going over soft and short field landings today (talking and looking at the POH, the clouds were too low for VFR flight <sad face>) and there were instructions for short field landings/TOs in the POH, but not soft field. Anyone know why?

Gusting-- do you all have personal minimums?

I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on gusts. Yesterday it was gusting to 25 (310/18G25) and that really made me uncomfortable. I'm wondering if anyone has set personal minimums with regard to gusts. (And--this might be the worlds stupidest question-- but does "gust" means that it...

Extra airspeed on final for safety (on 5000 ft rnwy)

Hey Everyone- I just found this board and I'm glad to be here and get people's opinions & advice. I have a question about extra airspeed. I soloed last week (!) and kept my airspeed on final the same as when my instructor is with me and as a result, floated longer than I was used to. (I've...
