That time we smoked a TBM 930....

Took a little ride in my buddy Steve's Turbo Commander 980 yesterday. He was kind enough to fly me up to see my old antique heep. Camarillo to Stockton and back. FL280. Just before us was a brand new TBM 900/930 on a conforming flight (they do final deliveries at CMA). After takeoff, ATC was...

PC12 on tiny uphill grass strip.

Here's a pretty cool clip of a PC12 taxiing out from its underground bunker, then actually taxiing on a steep uphill taxiway to a tiny grass field. Never seen anything quite like it before. Field is in Bolzano, which is the gateway into the Dolomites in Italy.

Does new rating automatically refresh IR currency?

So, let's say I do a checkride for COMM MULTI, but I'm not instrument current. Does the check ride renew currency like it does for a BFR?

    FSDO differences in interpretation problem.

I posted in another forum about renewing my Airworthiness Certificate. It seems like different FSDO's seem to interpret the rule books differently. Case in hand: I have a very worn, yellowed and tattered Airworthiness Certificate. I called FSDO and asked if I could come in and exchange it...

    Commercial license multi?

I'm thinking of doing the commercial license just to do it. Still gonna stay class 3 medical, but just have it. However, I do find the FAA rules very confusing. Do an IR ride in a twin and you get SE for free. Do a seaplane rating in a twin and you don't get ASES for free… So, if I do...

    Equipment codes confusion.

Hi. I used to file IFR with equipment code G on my previous plane as it had a WAAS 430. But this new one hasn't gotten any of that fancy stuff. I'm a little confused to what is best to file on the new one (see list below): The old girl has an ancient Apollo NMS, that does not have a...

Need to do 6 approaches in type?

I'm multi IR. My currency is running out. Do I need to do the 6 approaches, hold in a twin, or can I do it in a single?

    Steppin' up to a whim.

You know that time when you're stuck in a foreign hotel room for work and make the mistake of browsing airplane ads late one night when you can't sleep? You know that time when you happen to come upon a vintage, first generation turboprop that you could just about afford to get into if you...

The ultimate Piaggio P180 Avanti thread.

I've always been a bit of a torch carrier for these just because they look so friggin cool and have such spectacular performance. Plus, I'm half Italian.. Everyone kept saying they break, they're unreliable, they can't be serviced, they're finicky Italian etc. So much misinformation and hearsay...

    Help me identify Collins Nav/Com

I'm away from my POH and the country and would like to do some research. I have an ancient Collins panel mounted Nav/Com system. It's a remote system, where the actual radios are in the back. I got 3x Coms (one is a standby) and 2x Nav control units flush mounted. I had initially wanted to...

    Last UK Trislander retired.

Legendary UK operator Aurigny retires their last Trislander (G-JOEY) after 40 years in service. Even though only a mother can love the looks of the Trislander, it does have some kind of endearing charm. Like a piston DC-10. And I must admit I got a little emotional when I read the passengers...

    MU-2 into mountain grass strip.

MU-2's are too cool! Here's one going into Johnson Creek in the Idaho mountains. It's a 3500ft grass field at 5000ft elevation, very smooth. I was there a few years ago in my twin Commander for the Backcountry fly-in (I was the only twin there), and we had a blast. Highly recommend the place...

Multi Academy Award winning composer James Horner dead in plane crash.

Looks like he crashed his Tucano in a known aerobatic practice area. Horner wrote the music to Titanic, Avatar, Aliens, Braveheart and numerous other films. He had two Oscars and numerous nominations. Horner was an accomplished pilot who owned two turbine helicopters, a super cub as well as...

Stark 1, 2, 3 method and Turn and Bank indicators.

Help me clarify something. My new plane has a Turn and Bank indicator and not a Turn Coordinator that I'm used to. I thought about replacing it eventually, but then have read that it's actually in many ways a better instrument to recover on. I'm a little fuzzy on how to recover on that...

    Italian mid-air and ditching.

Some sort of RV aircrafts had a mid-air and one of them ditched in shallow waters by the beach. In this first angle you can see that his left wing has structural damage. He does a textbook ditching by dipping his tail in first, but because of the gear the plane flips over very rapidly...

How to sell your airplane easier - spend the money right.

A lesson I've learned now. If you buy an aircraft and plan on retaining as much sale value as possible should you one day want to sell, then: Put the money on bling and where it shows. Put it on new panels, new interiors and new paint, don't spend it on mechanics. People don't care that...

IPC every year - how painful?

My new insurance requirements require an IPC in type each year. I'm relatively new IR pilot, so still current and have not done one yet. I know they're outlined in the PTS, but what's the real world here? Is it more of an BFR-type thing, shoot the breeze, can't really fail, or is it an IR...

Cheap to run twin for someone who isn't afraid of oddballs.

There's a rare Wing Derringer for sale on Ebay right now. One of the very few certified 2 seat twins from this short lived producer (they went bankrupt in 1982). Apparently only 9 were produced. Obviously, factory support is non-existent, but most systems are pretty standard. And since it's...
