    C182 24V heated pitot - interchangeable with C172S?

My heated pitot assembly, PN 0721105-18, has given up the ghost; corrosion inside the casting has led to the wires separating from the unit and it seems impossible to access and repair. This specific part number is back-ordered with a 9+ month lead time. Someone has suggested using PN...

    New paint scheme - opinions

The 182 goes to paint in July and I've just about finished working on the new paint design; with Scheme Designers doing the actual graphic design to turn my ideas into graphics. I wanted an evolution of the current design, so I am using the same colours, and the same "wavy" flow (instead of...

    A frustrating GNC255 / Aera 660 mystery - solved

I'm wrapping up installation of a new GNC255A nav/comm. One of the nice features offered by this radio is that one can push comm frequencies from my existing touch-screen panel-mounted Aera 660 to the standby comm position of the GNC255A. Very convenient. Unfortunately, we just can't get the...

Anyone know what this co-ax fitting is?

Found in line on the co-ax leading to comm 2. Any idea what it is and if we should keep it?

Replacing a KX155 with GNC255 - how do we power the KI209 indicator?

Working on this swap with my A&P who hasn't done one of these before. The KI209 indicator was powered by the KX155 which has a "Switched Power Output" on its pin 12, to pin 8 of the KI209. The GNC255 does not have a similar power output to drive the indicator. The indicator power draw is...

Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated (my airplane is now a go-to image for crash articles)

When I set off around the world an Associated Press photographer turned up and got some shots of the departure. I guess he's put these photos onto some kind of journalist photo database because I'm finding that I'm now crashing and dying a lot in locations across the US, Greece, and even...

Owner produced parts - composite or 3D printing - contacts?

I need to replace a couple of fairing brackets that sit at the bottom of each landing gear leg on the 182. See attached a (not great) picture. Part number 0741642-1. These seem very hard if not impossible to obtain from a normal supplier. The current ones are metal but it seems like the kind of...

    GI 275 EIS configuration

I'm looking at removing my old Cessna stock engine gauges as part of an upcoming panel refresh and replacing with a more modern engine monitoring system. Right now I have a JPI 830, but it's not certified as primary so all the old gauges have to stay. I am hesitant to go with the JPI 900/930 as...

    Katamarino's flight to Bermuda

I'd always been vaguely interested in flying out to Bermuda, but this is made challenging by the fact that there is no Avgas available on the island. Indeed, the Bermuda AIP specifically forbids Avgas from being stored or dispensed on the island's only airport. That means that any lowly...

Comm 2 has died. Is it worth replacing?

My KX-155 Comm 2 has died. I have an Avidyne 540 as Nav/Comm 1. The 540 can have up to 4 standby frequencies lined up, and can also listen in on both the active and first standby frequency. Given that all I ever use Comm 2 for is checking the ATIS, and the 540 has this monitoring function, I'm...

    Light aircraft cabin noise levels

Has anyone ever measured dB levels inside a C182 or similar? The numbers I find online vary quite dramatically.

    Hangar space in LA area?

I have a French friend who is planning to fly to Oshkosh this year and then continue to the west coast. He wants to park his airplane up there until the following year, when he'll return for a trip around Central America. Does anyone have any contacts or suggestions for him to find hangar...

    Failing spark plug?

About 2 hours out of Hawaii, cylinder 3 EGT rose about 70f, and CHT dropped 30f. A mag check showed that one spark plug was not operating so I assumed it had failed. A few minutes later the temps went back to normal, and another mag check was normal too. Can a spark plug start to show failure...

Garmin G5 and STEC-30 heading bug discrepancy

I have G5 AI and HSI, and an STEC-30. When in heading mode, the autopilot flies exactly 4 degrees right of whatever heading is selected, which is irritating. Does anyone know if there's an easy fix for this, such as an adjustment in the G5 settings?

    Fiji AIP access

Does anyone have access to the Fiji AIP who could share the AD info for Nadi for me? Most specifically the Customs/Immigration hours. I am trying to be a cheap bastard and avoid paying $350 for a single use.

    The end of Reno

Looks like the air races are the latest victim of "we built too many houses around an airport". "A letter sent to supporters and fans said the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority made the decision to sunset the event citing the region's significant growth."...

    Shelf life of barreled AVGAS

I have access to a couple of sealed barrels, marked expiration of May 2021. To get any fresher fuel requires shipping barrels to the middle of the Pacific. Everything I've read suggests that this shouldn't be an issue; it lasts for many years when sealed. I used AVGAS in Resolute Bay that was...

Spark plugs - replace on hours?

2 of my plugs (massive electrode) were just replaced due to small cracks in the ceramic. The others have ~500 hours on them. Would it be good practice to replace the remaining 10 at the same time, given their age? Or just soldier on and replace as needed. If it makes any difference, I will be...
