    Basicmed certificate wants doctor's information

I think I should just get a flight physical (even though that still requires paperwork) because I don't get and probably didn't read something correctly regarding the Basicmed program. I passed the online medical quiz on the aopa website and now I need to fill in the certificate but don't know...

    Red sprite lightning

I was doing a blog post on my site today (I'll shameless plug that below). Apparently pilots have witnessed red sprite lightning for a century. It wasn't until 1989 that the phenomenon was documented (I guess by high speed photography). Anyone ever see this? I'm always way behind the pilot in...

    Once certified, always certified?

Is there ever a point in time when a certified plane can be decertified so that any changes made do not have to follow the certified rules?

    Atmospheric refraction

This something I just found out. Maybe some of you already know about this. When we see the sun just above the horizon, it really is just below the horizon due to atmospheric refraction. For some reason I'm just stunned to find this out.:goofy:

    Kickstarter skywriting

Wow, someone started (and has funded) a kickstarter project that will pay someone else to write something stupid in the sky. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/309790545/kurt-braunohlers-cloud-project?ref=NewsJan3113&utm_campaign=Jan31&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter

    Foreflight "Fly Charts"

I dunno. Maybe I just don't read. I just migrated from i1000 to foreflight and wanted to add sectionals. I didn't see "sectionals" in the downloads section of foreflight but I saw "Fly Charts." What the hell are "Fly Charts?" Adding on...went to downloads again and there was the accidental...

    eggnog

I miss Houston for a couple of reasons but this time of year I miss Bordens Premium eggnog so much that I plot a little secret flight there to some store, maybe Fiesta, and open the carton as soon as I take it out of the refrigerator, drink as much as I can and then roll in a ball with a tummy...

Anyone interested in flying someone to WY?

I have an employee who needs to be a witness in a court case Oct. 18. She and her boyfriend have been driving there for this issue and asked me to take them but I would miss work and just don't have a plane I can take for that long. It's in Pinedale (KPNA). They'd pay their share of flying fees.

    Skycatcher g300 dual screens learning

I've flown it twice and am checked out in it but the check out should have been on the g300 I think. The FBO said I can ask them to hook up power so I can learn it on the ground but garmin should make a video (for free) to explain it. I'm trying to read the pdf manual at home and it's not the...

scud flying VFR @ 500 ft AGL question

I know this is probably answered in another thread but.... What if I'm flying VFR and need to go to 500 ft AGL to stay under the cloud layer and I'm flying over a populated area? Do I have to ask for approval to do that if I'm outside a controlled area? And if I wanted to land at a class E I...

    Flying Wild Alaska episode schedule

Maybe the show is at the same time every week but my programming guide finds so many episodes that aren't numbered I don't know which is next. I went to discovery.com and it even looks like they show numerou multiple new episodes on a single day. Here's the link to the show schedule...

    Restaurant in Longmont

The little trailer restaurant at KLMO wants to qualify for a grant to expand their services. They need votes to get this. Here's what I was sent in an email from the Colorado Pilots Association. Give 'em a vote if you'd like to see a better restaurant there. "Hello Flight Deck Grill Friends ...

    Landing and eating mainly

I'm new to flying and want to land at airports with restaurants. I'm renting a 172 . It seems like the restaurants should be able to answer if I get charged something for parking. I called Perfect Landings (at KAPA) and they had to call an FBO to see if I would get charged. It also seems like...

    Old airlines, the old ways

I was listening to a podcast today on the way home from work and really like this guy's stories (Bill Duffy, Thoughts from the Flight Deck). He mentioned Pan Am...the series that you can watch on iTunes. The days when you could go in the cockpit and the glamour of flying....they were certainly...

    lowest altitude route

Is there some site or software that can find the lowest altitude route? I'd like to fly from Erie, CO to Grand Junction (in Sep to see the Blue Angles) but it looks like a 172 might be a challenge to use. I am looking at the CPA site that shows the passes and altitudes. Maybe I can figure it out...

    Endurance chart question

The 172R I'm flying has an endurance chart which uses standard temperature. Do I assume the chart means 15C at every altitude in the chart that goes up to 12,000 ft? Or does the chart mean that it's calculated sea level at standard temperature and the rest of the altitudes are based on standard...

    CG changing stall characteristics

What will change if the CG is moved aft? My Gleim book says...."As the CG is moved aft, the airplane flies at a lower angle of attack at a given airspeed because of reduced tail-down force....thus the critical angle of attack will be exceeded (causing the airplane to stall) at a lower...
