I am Looking to rent an airplane in DFW area

That'd be a long haul in a 172, as I'm sure you know. I've made it in our 182 (PDK -> HOT (fuel stop) -> ADS -> SAT) and it was a pretty significant trip. I think coming from that direction, we stopped in Natchez on the way back, which was a fun place to see for a little while and the folks...

    What criteria for FIKI?

I think that's what scares me the most. There was some Cirrus ad I saw a few months ago that sounded like a NTSB report waiting to happen. The guy was going on about how he was shooting an approach into Jackson Hole, was running low on fuel, had one chance, picking up ice, turned on TKS...

Inop fuel gauge - what would you do?

I can only think of a handful of older airplanes I've flown that have functioning and accurate fuel gauges. I always check the tanks, regardless of what the aircraft type is. It seems like the newer stuff w/ glass is more accurate. I still do the stick + fuel burn calculation though.

Why is the Cirrus so dangerous?

There have been periods in aviation where we'd be saying this about any number of airplanes which really were well designed, just flown by inexperienced pilots. Frankly, I don't get it. I'd rather have a Bonanza or Mooney than a Cirrus any day of the week. It makes no sense to me, spending...

    What criteria for FIKI?

I think I'd be less concerned about it on an aircraft that was able to quickly be out of icing conditions, however with something like a Cirrus, which is more likely to be in continuous icing conditions, I'd be more concerned about the fluid systems. Regardless, that's good to know. I wasn't...

    What criteria for FIKI?

My understanding is that those systems require constant tweaking to keep functioning. I've not heard many people that weren't marketing for Cirrus say they were reliable and effective enough to be relied upon.

Bonanza picks up ice in SoCal - ATC recording

Oh yea, definitely. I'm glad someone took charge, but I usually like to see pilots doing so rather than controllers. Definite props to the controller.

    Borrowing a plane

Make sure you look into a non-owned insurance policy to cover yourself (~200/yr)

    Not in the FAR/AIM

If you go for a checkride, ask your DPE for barf stories. They have more than anyone else in aviation.

    Final Flight, redux

My CFI is in his 70's and I think one of the things I learned from him is to take things slow. I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but he has a very suave and graceful way of handling things, never too rushed and never over responsive. He seems to always take his time, evaluate the...

Bonanza picks up ice in SoCal - ATC recording

Am I the only one that thinks the pilot should have taken control of the situation instead of the controller?

    Final Flight, redux

Great story. Prior to learning to fly, I'd have found it amazing how many people fly into their 70's and 80's without issue. There seems to be a certain level of mental awareness that pilots maintain longer than others. This is just my personal experience and may be vastly different for...

    Solution to GA dying?

I think we need to be better representatives of GA by not being idiots and ending up in the paper or in someone's back yard. Every person I talk to about flying that doesn't have experience with small airplanes immediately defaults to "isn't it dangerous?". Once you debunk that, they ask the...

    Whistling noise in IMC?

Our 182 does it as well, but only in IMC. I asked my CFII what it was and he told me the airplane was haunted :o He also mentioned it might have something to do with moisture buildup in parts of the air vents, but that was just a best guess. I have to admit, it's the most disorienting part of...

    Microsoft Turd

I used to do the same thing, I wrote all my writeups (usually ~7 pages) in vim, then mailed them for review as a .txt. They always ended up in a .doc, but at least I knew I wasn't the one responsible for that ;)

    Does writen test score matters?

Mine said the same thing. These tests are an exercise in how well you can take a test, not much else. I know plenty of people that aren't even pilots that could study overnight and pass it the next day, yet they couldn't fly instruments at all. If I had bombed the oral or the checkride, I'd...

Dumbest thing you have done and lived to tell about it

I did this on my PPL checkride. The funny part was, during the oral we were having a conversation about how he had a student a few days prior come in and forget to remove the chocks during preflight. The guy had started the engine up and didn't want to shut down, so he set the parking brake...
