    Helene relief flights

I don’t know… all I saw were trucks and helicopters being loaded at the airport. I have read requests that individual trucks not try to bring supplies into Asheville itself because the roads are likited and congested. Similarly both AVL and HKY are shut off to GA because those airports are...

    Helene relief flights

It's a valid point, and helos seem to be the most useful/needed transport down there. I talked to one guy whose company lent their pilots and helicopters for the relief effort and they could get into individual communities, which was good to see. I'd say fixed wing has been useful for...

    Helene relief flights

Yesterday I took part in transporting supplies to western North Carolina as part of the Hurricane Helene relief effort. While we often wring our hands about the declining state of GA, it was honestly inspiring to see hundreds of planes and pilots of all types crisscrossing the state to get...

Forward Slips with Flaps on a Practical Test

Not a flight instructor, but it seems to me that preparing your students to argue with the DPE on the accuracy of the POH is setting them up for a failure. I can't see a scenario when a DPE can fail a student for following the POH to the letter.

Best plane for first time plane owner?

My personal limit for runway length (regardless of material) at sea level is about 2200', but that's probably a little conservative. I've taken it into a 3000' grass strip with no problem. The issue with landing is that very small variations in airspeed on final can result in floating and can...

Best plane for first time plane owner?

Since nobody else is giving the Grumman perspective I guess I'll leap in. Like other planes, prices for Tigers and Cheetahs leapt up during Covid, but my impression is they've moderated a bit in the last year. You can pick up a late-70's Tiger in good condition for around $130K, and a...

    Cats

Only if you really like slobber. Honestly I don’t know why geneticists aren’t trying to engineer the perfect pet. Friendly and attentive like a dog. Clean, independent, and non-smelly like a cat.

    Cats

A lot depends on the cat's personality and how it was raised. I've seen videos of cats being brought on hikes, riding in someone's backpack, but I think you have to train them to accept this during kittenhood. On the other hand my cat melts down if you take him off the front porch. They are...

Good place to hide a spare key on plane?

When my co-owner forgot the key to the Grumman, he randomly tried the key to his home storage shed. It worked.

    Airline Exit Rows

I’m with the hipster here. Sounds like he had a good point regardless of the old guy’s ability to spew invective.

Just Bought Land On Paved Runway :)

Congratulations! I was in Traverse City and Empire a couple of weeks ago and it was beautiful. For my money, the beaches are nicer than anything we have on the East Coast.

    Cash is King

Seems like a standard issue market correction. But we’re in an election year, so it’s either being interpreted as the end of times or a nothingburger depending on your viewpoint.

    GPS backup

If GPS goes out and you don’t have access to a VOR then get vectors from ATC.

    Cherokee 6 vs Saratoga SP

I’m confused. If you don’t need room for five passengers why are you considering a Saratoga or Cherokee 6? Wouldn’t a Comanche, Mooney, or V35 get you more speed with lower costs?

Alternative or Sustainable fuels - another gone west

I hear a lot these days about sodium batteries, which seem to promise lower costs for storage. Any thoughts on whether those make storage and transport of solar power more feasible?

    I cant find a hangar.

I’ve kept my AA-5B outside for seven years with no ill effects. As mentioned above hail is the one thing to worry about - I’d ask the airport about overnight availability of hangars & get ready to pay to store your plane in a hangar overnight if severe T’storms or hail is forecast. Otherwise...

Sumping fuel in the desert/preflight checklists?

First flight of the day and after fueling. That’s what I meant.

Sumping fuel in the desert/preflight checklists?

I always sump at the start of each flight, and after adding fuel. My one engine failure (or sputter) in flight was caused by water in the fuel system. I’d find a different CFI.
