Enough jobs for the student pilot population?

Flying can be a GREAT hobby. Nearing the end of college I wanted to fly jets for a living, beginning with the Navy or Air Force, which would have also kept me out of the draft lottery. I realized that medical school would also keep me from being drafted into the infantry and that medicine...

    Insurance

Or the other mistake - landing on asphalt with the wheels retracted, although that's a much less costly mistake both in terms of damage and injury/death.

    Insurance

Apparently the loss rate is higher with amphibians, and my underwriter said to figure on 20% of the hull value per year. We fully insured our PA12 on straight floats and it was very reasonable.

    2023 FAA Airmen Data

I suspect there's a big difference between "certificates held" (first image) and "active pilots". There are a lot of certificates held by pilots who haven't flown in years. In fact, if they're not surrended, when are they NOT held? I would think that the amount of fuel sold is much more...

Should I even try for medical?

"Worth" is a loaded term linked to time and money. You don't know how much of each of those will be required until you start the process, but I suspect it's "doable".

Does the signoff BASIC-MED physician have the authority to determine what medications are LEGAL to fly under?

The PIC determines for every flight if he can operate safely. That includes a risk assessment of (1) the likelihood of another event and (2) an assesment of that pilot's ability to safely operate should that event occur. Note that there are lots of pilots currently flying with a medical...

Does the signoff BASIC-MED physician have the authority to determine what medications are LEGAL to fly under?

Not exactly. Having a medical certificate does not require you to operate with it. You can hold a medical certificate and still operate under Basic Med. It's an important distinction and a good reason for many pilots to have both. For example, you are newly diagnosed with cancer, kidney...

    Windows 10 Help

I don't think that was anything that wasn't more beneficial than harmful. I've been trying to revitalize this thing for months and it apparently is just a slow and unpredictable process. I've taken it to the shop twice when it wouldn't reboot after multiple attempts but then it would boot as...

    Windows 10 Help

Well, I disconnected a the 3 TB hard drive and it wouldn't boot, so I plugged it back in and it still wouldn't boot, so I headed to the computer hospital to see if they can figure it out. Update: They deterimined that the SSD drive was failing. With the realization that W10 is also about to...

    Windows 10 Help

I have no idea. It might have been done by Macrium reflect when I installed that, but I really don't know what I'm doing so I might have done it myself. It wouldn't be the first time I've tried to outsmart myself and complicate something that should be simple. I will do your suggestion to...

    Windows 10 Help

Thanks. From what I gather the OS is on the SSD drive and the (G) and (H) partitions are on the mechanical HD with a large empty partition. I can disconnect the drive to confirm, but I assume I need to replace the drive with the (G) and (H) partitions, so should I just order a 1 TB SSD drive...

    Windows 10 Help

Here's what I see with Disk Management and what shows on the (H) and (G) drives. (I removed a single 1.77 file from the H drive, which now shows as empty.) How reckless am I allowed to be removing the mechanical hard drive? I'm 95% sure that Disk 1 is the SSD drive and Disk 0 is the mechanical...

    Windows 10 Help

Hijack question. If you think a five year old HD is acting up (based on hearing the spinning up coincident with sound and image stuttering) what's involved in just replacing that drive with an SSD hard drive? The current mechanical hard drive is just being used for back up images (Macrium...

seen on the fbo bathroom wall

Not me, because I could forget as soon as I leave the bathroom. I like the trick of putting my watch on the opposite wrist, which I leave there until the FP is closed. (Not that I file VFR flight plans much any more.)

    Military pilots favor gliders?

I doubt there's any more "abundance" of ex-mil glider pilots than ex-mil in other types of flying. I can only think of one (an instructor who is ex Air Force, but not in jets) in our club, which is active enough to do 1500 to 1800 flights in a six month season. Maybe some of the ex-airline...

    Seaplane in the Caribbean?

There are at least two good options in Florida - Jones Brothers in Tavares and Jack Brown's in Winter Haven. Obviously that would require a little more complex itinerary for a Caribbean vacation, but distance wise it's not too far out of the way.

    Seaplane in the Caribbean?

There has to be a lot of profit margin for an operation to be successful in salt water. The corrosion seems to get everywhere, not just in the floats.

Does the signoff BASIC-MED physician have the authority to determine what medications are LEGAL to fly under?

That's fine but it's still an operations list, not a certification list, and better yet it gives guidance for how long before you CAN fly after using them.
