Online Group Airplane Scheduling with IOS & Android access

Don't forget that iOS and Android can run web browsers. Some websites look really good and are very easy to use on mobile device browsers. You don't always need (or want) a separate app.

Almost had a plane vs car

Re: people not paying attention on active movement areas... As I was being marshalled into a parking spot yesterday, I was directed to loop around behind a parked plane to come in alongside it. As I turned to pass behind the plane, I met a guy messing around on his phone completely blocking my...

Looks like VOR is back on the menu boys...

The cheapest mitigation would be a few lines of code to check if the change in position makes sense. The spoofing scenario described is that the valid input signal resulting in position x,y,z is suddenly replaced by a spoofed signal resulting in a position dozens of miles away from x,y,z...

Looks like VOR is back on the menu boys...

There are planes with GPS and inertial nav systems from manufacturers other than Boeing and Airbus. From the links I provided above:

Looks like VOR is back on the menu boys...

Yes, I understand that's how it works in your aircraft. It (apparently) doesn't work that way in all aircraft.

Looks like VOR is back on the menu boys...

I don't fly airliners, but I do have some familiarity with GPS and inertial navigation systems in other vehicles. I, too, was surprised to hear that (apparently) in some planes the two nav sources are closely coupled. Had someone told me this story in conversation at a cocktail party, I'd have...

    Fixed ADS-B In

The FAA towers are on the ground, so I'd mount it below if I were picking a spot. That said, and relevant to your second question, for over seven years I've been using a home-built Stratux sitting on the hat rack inside my Cherokee with the antennas just inches from the metal skin of the...

Looks like VOR is back on the menu boys...

Every time the subject of GPS/ILS/VOR/LORAN/etc. jamming or spoofing comes up, a badly-damaged collection of neurons fires off in my brain, trying to remind me of some old movie that used this idea. I have a dim memory about some nefarious villain overriding whatever radio signals were guiding...

Looks like VOR is back on the menu boys...

Yes. Systems could easily be built such that a sudden change in GPS solution is not passed on to the inertial nav system. It's just that (apparently) the installed base of GPS-linked INS's (or at least some of them) do not perform this validity check and so are vulnerable, and it takes lots of...

iFly EFB questions, ipad vs android

Pretty much any device that isn't locked down. If the ADSB-in device allows 3rd-party software integration, you can pretty much expect that iFly supports it.

    Fixed ADS-B In

If I were a renter or club member I wouldn't rely on the school/club to provide a mount point for me. Instead, I'd use the same method to mount my tablet as I do in my own plane: https://rammount.com/collections/ram-x-grip-tablet-mounts/products/ram-b-121-un9u

    Fixed ADS-B In

This won't help with the $$$ sliding out of your wallet, but it illustrates that there's more than one hard-mount device out there to provide ADS-B in: https://www.freeflightsystems.com/avionics/ads-b-system/dual-band-ads-b-receiver/

iFly EFB questions, ipad vs android

Part of being a beta tester involves trying the new beta code on as many devices and OS versions as possible, so I don't always have a "pristine" device remaining when I go fly. That's why my plan was to use FltPlan Go as my backup.

    Brew Day:

That's akin to saying, "It's a lot easier to buy a commercial airline ticket than to own your own plane." :p

Cockpit space in Tomahawk, Skipper, & Yankee?

I hear that nickname repeated by way more people who've never flown a Tomahawk than from pilots who have. It's a tired old cliche. The plane was intentionally designed to be spinnable for training reasons, but it doesn't just randomly go into a spin if you don't put it into one.

iFly EFB questions, ipad vs android

Not to hijack the discussion, but I also have religiously kept FltPlanGo on all my flight devices with data constantly updated. I had reason to use it recently when (a beta version of!) iFly kept crashing on me during flight. However, despite the fact that it showed "green" on the download...

iFly EFB questions, ipad vs android

Did you submit bug reports after the crashes? Adventure Pilot's historically been pretty good about chasing down bugs, but they don't do any chasing if they don't know about them. I've been an iFly user since the original 700, and have used it on numerous Android tablets over the years (Nexus...

    EKG for BasicMed?

OP, what do you consider to be the downside to getting the EKG? - Is he going to charge you more for an exam that includes the EKG? I'd be surprised, and even if so, I doubt it's more than a few gallons of avgas. - Is he going to find something concerning? How is knowing/learning about a...

The greatest invention in general aviation

I've never felt the need for a cupholder. I manage my fluid intake before flight such that my fuel tanks empty before my bladder fills.
