Adjusting the Squelch on a G1000

For the intercom, you press the Man Squelch button then use the intercom volume knobs to adjust. For the radios, that's probably an internal avionics-shop setting. I don't know of any aviation radio I've been able to adjust the squelch on using panel-mounted controls.

Team effort or lone wolf training?

Print out @TCABM 's post and memorize it. All good advice. Absolutely. I always find it interesting when people want to minimize their time with a CFII. That is money well spent, and necessary. While the practice with a SP can be valuable, don't expect it to mean you will be able to get away...

I have tasted speed, and I like it

It's amazing, isn't it? I fly everything from single engine pistons to midsize jets, and it doesn't matter what you're flying, a 10 kt headwind sucks and a 10 kt tailwind feels great! Doesn't matter if you're cruising at 50 kts or 500 kts. Obviously the net effect is greater at the slower...

    ACS Standards Question

"Piano keys"? In my experience, that term means the threshold markers. So the difference between the runway threshold and the base of the piano keys must be all of 10 or 20 feet. But assuming you mean the aiming point markers/thousand foot markers/Captain's bars, I do tend to agree with your...

    ACS Standards Question

Yes, you are correct, I forgot we were talking about the CFI checkride. Thanks!

    data cards

I flew a plane for a couple of years that had two 430's. One was WAAS, the other one wasn't. The cards could NOT be used in each other, as I proved more than once because I'm a slow learner on the necessity of remembering which one was which. Nothing bad happens, it just gives an error on...

    ACS Standards Question

When I was teaching, yes I would.often say "Land on the thousand foot markers". Because if you can, then you are definitely within 200 of the start of them. I admit saying it this way is a bit of a verbal shorthand for the real intent, which is "your target is the start of the thousand foot...

"You should return a deceased airman's certificate to the FAA"??

I'm actually quite surprised, as I'll bet they were too. You're probably the first person to send something in!

"You should return a deceased airman's certificate to the FAA"??

I just got a new airman certificate and decided to read the paper it comes with. At the very bottom of the front side it says "A deceased airman's certificate should be returned to the Airman Certification Branch within 30 days of death." I assume this is an attempt to track living airmen. But...

Navigating to a DME via Garmin when Enroute

The reason is to support DME/DME/IRU navigation for airplanes with FMSes that support it.

My first 6 hours continuous flight - need advice

Is it just me, or does that look a lot like the Cessna 162 Skycatcher? Did they sell off the rights to build it to another company? I mean, it looks really similar, with a few small modifications.

    The MyFlightBook thread

Eric, is there a way to create "airports" only visible to me? I've recently started flying ultralights. I almost always fly from non-airports. Like a friend's farm, that kind of thing. I could enter the coordinates each time, but that seems like it would be tedious. I'd like to create a...

Navigating to a DME via Garmin when Enroute

I assume the OP is talking about a DME only facility. Like the GTH DME, for example, which is not a VOR, VORTAC, etc., just a DME. There are quite a few of these as the VOR portions get decommissioned. I don't know the 480 at all, but why would you be using "Nearest" to search for it, anyway...

Tach to Hobbs conversion for logging

I'd say not exactly "Hobbs", necessarily. When I owned my plane, the Hobbs was connected to the master switch. This is not common, but certainly isn't rare. One time it accumulated several hours while in maintenance. So while on a normal flight there wouldn't be much time between master on and...

What plane would you buy in my situation?

@Nikhiln25 - definitely this. Get on hangar waiting lists at your local airport NOW, so that you're closer to getting one by the time you actually get a plane. In many parts of the country they can be very long. You don't usually need to own a plane yet to get on the list.

Cheapest way to build retract time

Easy to find here in OK. Many, maybe most, stations have an ethanol-free option. Just bought some a couple of days ago at the station 1/4 mile from my house.

    Belt-driven reduction units?

Some "aerial vehicles" do! It's a (very common) 185cc 2-stroke engine with a belt reduction. I know, not useful for what you're asking.

Tach to Hobbs conversion for logging

Most? In my experience, only 1 airplane I've ever flown was wired like that, and that was the one I owned. All the others I've rented or otherwise flown were wired to an oil pressure switch.

Tach to Hobbs conversion for logging

Who's going to be able to contest differently? If you say a flight was 2.0, there's nobody that can say "no, it was only 1.8 because of tach conversion errors, blah blah". I'm not saying to just make up numbers, but if you put down 2.0 due to measuring in a reasonable way, it's 2.0. But I also...

Cfi lesson plan from scratch or pre made lesson plan

I have always been a strong advocate of building your own lesson plans. It's a skill you need to have, and when else are you going to force yourself to practice that skill then while in CFI training? I've posted my views on this before:
