Soaring in NYC

Wow!! Can't believe I never heard of this! I wonder how long he stayed up.
There sure were a lot less trees in the park back then... :D

Great old video Tony! Was it a winch tow? Do you know the glider model?

I was just reading about this flight last night in my new to me copy of The World's Vintage Sailplanes by Martin Simons. I think the flight was in 1931 and at the moment I can't remember the model of the sailplane that Hirth brought over. It was a bungee launch from the park next to the Hudson River. Apparently the police were quite relieved when he landed as it caused a hell of a traffic jam. I'll look up the details again tonight if I remember

Wolf was flying the Musterle (Wanderer) for the flight in New York. It was a development of the Darmstadt I which first flew in 1927 at the Wasserkuppe and then came to the US and soared the sand dunes on Cape Cod. The Darmstadt flights in 1928 were the first soaring flights in the US since the Wright Brothers had set the 9 minute 45 second world duration record at Kitty Hawk in 1911.
