Everything Offends Me
In early June, I'm going to Las Vegas with my GF. The place we're staying is VERY very close to McKarron, so much so that flying into KHND or KVGT would be a major hassle.

I've flown into KLAS before, but only for about a 5 minute park job to pick someone up. How bad will I be raked for parking 3 days there?

Also - if I do fly into KVGT, is there any easy way to get to the Sahara? That would be a good starting point for the remaining trip to our place.

Finally, what about getting back to KVGT, if that becomes necessary?

WEll, McCarran has a ramp fee of $60 @ Atlantic and their fuel is over $7/gal. Try this site: http://www.airnav.com/airport/KLAS

I suggest KHND. They have a shuttle and their charges are much more
reasonable.

I live close to Las Vegas and have been to both airports in the last year.

+1. LAS is a big-iron airport with high-roller prices.

I highly recommend Henderson.

$5 overnight with reasonable fuel prices. Great staff at the FBO.
Rental cars available at reasonable rates, right inside the FBO.
Free shuttles every so often to the strip, but I would rather have a car.
Good restaurant inside as well, if you are so inclined.

ATC is much better and easier to deal with. I have been denied entry into KLAS while VFR in the past and had to "divert" to HND. :mad3:

Did I mention the great FBO staff at HND?

Nick two words Signature and Atlantic OUCH! See this from airnav just last month

From Dave Ford on 03-Apr-2009 Landing/ramp fee at Signature. The cost is $28 handling fee (or 10 gallons fuel purchase), plus $65/night for a single engine plane

I've been to all 3.

Preference is to VGT - there was a van shuttle that was cheap/free. Easy in-out, but brush up on procedures, it's crowded airspace.

LAS - very expensive. Really. You'll think the casinos are a bargain. And escorts were required (security crap).

Henderson: I like the airport. I rented a car, but had to wait for some reason (like the car wasn't ready). Enterprise.... It is further from the strip, but most casinos have free parking. No shuttle when I went in there, easy in-easy out. ATC wanted max-rate climb out of there on IFR on a very hot day... 500 FPM was max-rate with the load I had on a hot day even with the TC.

You can rent a car and fuel it for a week for the difference between there and the one out to the east, Boulder City, or whatever it is.

If you do decide on KLAS, Atlantic has a free shuttle that will take you to the Sahara and pick you up... at least they did. I would check on it though.

hey you vegas guys; while I have you here -- I have a friend in the area desparate for a hangar or even a sunshade, any leads? He is nearest nLV but apparently none there.
/7500, sorry Nick

Also if it happens to be windy that day and they are only using 25L/R, Good luck getting in VFR. I have had the "no VFR's for the next hour" response before.

It really is sad what McCarren has become like. I remember flying in there a couple of times a week back when Hughes was still there. The place was GA friendly back then. Disney and Wall Street ruined Vegas....

Unless something has changed there is a free shuttle FROM VGT TO the strip, but you are on your own back to VGT.

The issue with LAS is the cost and the cost only. Just one guy but I've never had a problem flying in or out of there VFR, but the overnight fee, yikes.

Seems like free shuttle is a relative term based on what others have said it costs to put down there for a couple of days :yikes:

Guess it depends on how much a taxi is to the other airports or what a rental car might cost. If someone is only going to the casinos on the strip I wouldn't recommend renting a car. Although parking is free it's usually a very long walk from the parking area to the front desk.

Best bet right now is Henderson. They still have the free shuttle to the Strip area three times a day, 10am, 1 pm and 4 pm. You have to advise them at least an hour before those times that you'll want the shuttle. Parking is $5 a day. Fuel is relatively cheap. Cab ride back from the Sahara will be close to $50. There may be a bus that gets you closer. Also a restaurant there with good eats if you're waiting for the shuttle.

N. Vegas is NOT currently offering the shuttle service, so you would need a cab into town, about $25 each way. Can take a while to get one, so call Unicom. You can take a city bus for $3, but it involves two routes. Parking and fuel are the same prices.

You might be able to justify McCarran for one night, but not for three. Note that you will not save any time going in there, with the long taxi time and far away parking. It took me more than 20 minutes just to get a word in on Clnc Delivery to get out of there, and I am not radio shy. Again, you will not save time at McCarran. I promise you this.

If you want a rental car, HND offers reliable Hertz and Enterprise/ Rates are very variable though. If you'll be staying around the Strip, no need for a car.

I've done all three, and when I go on May 26, I'll be flying into Henderson.

The bus in Vegas is good as well. You can get from North Las Vegas to downtown and the strip for a couple of bucks max.

When we flew to Vegas a few years ago, we went to Henderson. We just missed the last free shuttle into town, but the cab ride wasn't too pricey. HND was easy to get in-and-out of (flying-wise) from the south as well. HND was a nice facility, too - it's always nice to treat the S.O. to some bling. ;)

I had a look at the waiting list last week, well over 100 people waiting for a shade hanger.:yikes:

Best bet is to look around and see if someone has room in their larger hanger to share.

25L was closed for remodeling for most of the winter. With high west winds closing down 01/19 L/R then that makes LAS a one runway airport.

25L has reopened, so you should not get that call for a while. But we still put up with "flow control restrictions", which will cnx the VFR pop up wanting to get in.

Last time I flew to Las Vegas I went to Henderson and got a cheap rental car. The previous visit I went to McCarran and spent 30 minutes baking under the July sun waiting for takeoff clearance.
