Another "compensation" question....

I am going to be a star. In a movie, no less. My brother in law is an independent filmmaker. His first effort won awards at South By Southwest, and was picked up by IFC (independent Film Channel) for showing domestically plus DVD sales overseas.

That being said...

His next movie calls for a pilot and a plane. I've been pestering him for years for a speaking role in a film. My wife and I have done a lot for him over the years, so payback time is nigh.

My question is this. My airplane, a single, will appear in the movie, as will I in the role as pilot. I have my Comm Multi, but not the single add-on. I will receive no compensation for this role. I won't even accept money for fuel, or any use of the aircraft. I am not an actor. I will not pursue a professional acting role, nor a professional flying role.

I plan to have a note put in the closing credits to the extent of "No compensation was paid for the aircraft or pilot."

Question is this: do you think I will violate any FARs? My read, several times over, is that I will be ok.

He may not receive money but will ANY money be paid out for ANY purpose surrounding the use of that aircraft?

Will you have any fun? Do you make any money doing anything else? Are you in the top 50% of U. S. incomes?

If so, you can expect to hear from both the FAA and the IRS.

Andrew, just go get your Comm single. This is your second question in a week about an operation that may be questionable. A third question and you will have spent more time asking questions than you would have if you just went and got the add-on. ;)

Andrew, Will your name be shown in the credits? If so the FAA might consider that to be compensation since it could have value in promoting you to the world. Otherwise I can't think of any way you'd be in violation of any FARs considering you're paying for all your own expenses and not recieving any compensation.

Out of curiosity, and not related to your question, is the flying a major part of the plot or just incidental to the story?

Better answer just buy a Twin.:D

And if you're going to appear in a movie, it should be a porn movie for goshsakes! I could never, they don't make cameras big enough.

You do know that unless this story takes place on an island or tropical place, you may have to fly your Matrix wearing something other than shorts, sandals and a t-shirt.

Modest aren't we.

Funny, isn't it? I never thought I'd be in the situation and, blammo, 2x in a month.

Triathlon training has taken away a lot of my flying time. That, plus winter wx, has put the kibosh on finishing off the SEL. I guess I should just buckle down and knock it out - before my screen debut!

BTW you might want to disguise the plane's registration number, either by applying a little tape or in the editing suite. You never know what bad things might come of having your airplane become "famous".

I've noticed this is not an uncommon phenomenon, hence why I've been trying to be prepared for opportunities that may or may not ever arise.

You should be able to get it done pretty quickly. For my Commercial, I'd gone up with the instructor once and had gone up another time or two for some practicing, and then I decided that I wanted to get it knocked out prior to my recent trip to Boston. So, I called my instructor, told him what I wanted to do, and we went at it hard over the course of the week prior to me leaving. He'd arranged it with the DE for a Saturday test, and we got it done. I had 4 practice sessions that week. The nights that I wasn't flying, I was studying for the oral, which won't be an issue for you.

I don't know how your schedule is (i.e. if it would allow that kind of time), but I'd think that you could do something similar if you wanted to and just get it done, especially since you've already got your Comm, this would just be the single add-on.

Yeah -- I thought the same thing. I'm definitely going to talk to the cinematographer about that.

You know, we enjoy the most screwed-up, over-regulated hobby there is.

I'm hoping your BIL does a remake of "Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World". :D

If you fly through a billboard, make sure it's paper and not linen...
