50 knot winds out of the south created some spectacular lenticular clouds over the northern edge of the Olympic Mountains in Washington State. This stack was close to Jefferson County Internaitonal Airport and it was "sporty" up there!

Yesterday we flew 6.6 hrs on the Hobbs from S IL to KC to go to a gas station for lunch. This was a dream come true trip for me. Our first family trip after getting my ppl in January.

I enjoyed my flight a couple of weeks ago over the Salt River canyon to Grapevine (88AZ) so much, that I brought Mrs. P along this time. On the way there we flew a more southerly route past the Superstition Mountains and the huge copper mine at Globe AZ, and landed at the San Carlos Apache Airport (P13). The Apache Gold Casino is right across the highway, so we had breakfast and dropped $20 in a slot machine before heading on to Grapevine.

Pilawt, is special permission required to land at Grapevine?
 
Always wondered if they have some cool way of putting those on the rotor blades or if it's just carrying a ladder around with you everywhere, lol.

The Sikorsky socks:

With a two-man operation, one guy stands on a step on the tail boom and slides the first sock over the blade tip. He then pulls it over to his associate, who pulls it around like a dog on a leash, stopping each time the next blade is within reach of the guy on the tailboom.

For the one man op, the lucky bastard gets to jump down off the tailboom and pull the blades around one at a time until all four are attached, the he moves the blades to a 45 degree from straight ahead (12 O'clock) position and ties the ropes to the landing gear.

It is great fun in high wind or raining conditions...

The 2023 Arizona Balloon Classic at the Goodyear Ballpark (spring training home of the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Whatevers) was just starting as I took off from the adjacent Phoenix-Goodyear Airport.

From 1865 to 1905, Culling's Well was a major stop on the road from the Colorado River to the huge Vulture gold mine near present-day Wickenburg, and to the territorial capital at Prescott. It was known as "The Lighthouse in The Desert." All that is left now is a big hole in the ground where the well collapsed, some foundation stones and the concrete trough where travelers' animals were watered (for a fee). Photos over the Twin Cities last Friday. This was my first time picking up flight following since passing my Private checkride a couple months back, transitioning the Minneapolis/St. Paul bravo en route to KSTP to have dinner at Holman's Table. I made our dinner reservation on this particular evening because the moon was nearly full and it's nice to see the moonlight reflecting off the snow-covered ground; unfortunately, the sky ended up being overcast ~5500 ft. My girlfriend took some photos from the right seat, but the ride was a little bumpy as we descended through 3000, so most of her photos were just streaks of blurry light. :D

Landed at KANE on our way home to KSTC, reset my night currency clock for another 90 days, and logged a couple more hours of cross country time. Gotta start studying for Instrument soon.

OAT on the ramp was around 0°F, not my most fun preflight experience.

Couple Saturdays ago at about 730 in the morning. It was 17°f in the air and the warm artificial snow on the ground at our local ski slopes/hills was creating a small cloud. There was a stiff 10-15 kt wind on the ground.

Thanks for likes everyone. That same day as above I flew into the wind first and came back with the wind to my back. It was smooth and my 160hp C172 was cruising. Do I really want a 182? I saw 149 GS pop up for a second or two but never did see 150kts. I should have pushed the power up more for the photo op but didn't think of that at the time.

2500RPM @ 2,600ft? Just out of curiosity, how are you leaned when running at that setting? That has to be close to 75% or more.

I didn't lean much at all the whole morning, the DA was -1750. I run it at 2450 2500 pretty much all the time. Is that bad?

Nope, not bad at all, just curious what others do! Assume plugs don’t foul very often when not leaning much?

I lean aggressively during the hot summer months and when taxing. Lucking no I don't have any fouling problems but do swap plugs to clean them about every 100 hrs. Like every other oil change. I have 2 sets I swap in and out. I also am running a power flow exhaust so richer is better for my setup. The PF really does make a difference on a 0-320.

I gotcha! I don’t have an engine monitor, so I strictly run off a power chart and tachometer. I can never be super certain where I’m running it at, but I aim for 65%. Doing that, I lean til rough, and enrichen til smooth and then maybe a little some.

Yea no engine monitor either in my 172. What I don't know hopefully won't hurt me. I don't don't even lean until stumbles, I run about 1" out unless I am real high which is not that often.

Nice to see that there is no snow up there where you're at. We're heading back north in a few weeks and I was hoping all the white stuff will be gone by the time we head back.

Flew that lakefront route earlier this morning. The weather in Florida is much nicer than northern Illinois

(I'm not actually complaining about the weather this year, it's been mild)

Ok, most things in Florida are nicer than Illinois.

And people say Illinois isn't worth anything. It's great for IFR currency.
Illinois as a place is great; it's mainly the governance I take issue with. That and the fact it gets so cold here, but that hasn't been an issue this "winter".
