For speed I would say the long ez for quick build I would say zenith or sonex.
 
Buy an older but finished and flying RV 12 something. You' can find plenty to do rebuilding the cockpit, instrument panel, lighting, etc. This is assuming you don't need detailed instructions and prepackaged parts.
 
Nice documentary. Brilliant someone thought to preserve that piece of history.

This time period was the last throws of California being a nice place to live. When the gold rush of the .com hit in 1995 all heck broke loose. Cost of living got very expensive, lots of people were displaced by new comers, and we have not elected a republican in major office since giving any political balance. (gov Arnold doesn't count)

Nice to see this documentary and people pulling together.
