Gastric Bypass

To my knowledge, there is no guidance in the AME guide on such procedures. You might want to reach out to your regional flight surgeon’s office for further guidance.

You could definitely do second class......been there done it (sleeve). And I don't see why you couldn't hold a first class....with no complications.

There's an article in the CAMI newsletter on bariatric surgery. It implies that it is indeed certifiable. Most complications occur in the first 30 days post surgery, so there's a hard downtime for the first month. After that the physician reevaluates. Note that if you're considering this, you're still obese after the surgery and in addition to checking for surgical complications, the AME has a whole slew of other things to check: cardiovascular issues including hypertension, sleep apnea, etc...

The agency requires the psychological evaluation done prior to the bypass, the admission note, the operative note , the discharge summary.
Then it needs six months so see that your weight has stabilized, and that your liver functions remain normal.

And like Ron sez, the other items have to get checked out as well....remember, to the FAA you are a "Total Package".
