Thinking about a Hot Air Balloon

Passed my commercial add-on hot air balloon about a month ago in So. Cal. Very cool. Any update on training for airship? Are the Kings still active in that?

Since January I've had about a dozen balloon flights in Kansas. All have been very fun. Some had steerage, most were pretty fast. About half of the landings were stand up. Most landings were good.

I just got home from crewing at the Hot Air Ballon National Championships in Scottsbluff, NE. My pilot was a friend who lives here in Wichita but works professionally as a ride pilot in Phoenix (Winter) and Seattle (Summer). It was an incredible experience for me and for him. Lots of high velocity education. Ground crew is not just helping launch and recover the balloon but providing a lot of tactical help in flight over the radio and preflight planning prep work. The pilots also work together as small teams in flight.

The schedule was rough with 4:15 AM alarm clocks to make 5:15 AM pilots meetings and 6 AM launches.

There were 40 balloons there which is a tad small for the nationals but it was pretty awesome to launch them all and see them crowding in to the first target on day 1.
