Several months ago I applied for a class 2 medical. In 2016 I had an RF ablation to correct Afib. As expected it was deferred. FAA requested several tests. 24hr Holter, which was normal. Stress test (took me 13:40 to hit my target hr (181), my Mets were 16.5). Stress test was normal with one single PAC. TSH was 2.3 (normal). Echo, both right and left ventricles mildly dilated, but cardiologist said he’d expect that as I Am 6’5. EF varies between 51-55% (over the last 4 I have in as many years). My blood pressure is good. Sleep study revealed I have mild obstructive sleep apnea. My AHI was 6.1, sleep efficiency was 86.9%, and my SpO2 through the various stages of sleep ranged from a low of 93.3% to a high of 93.6%. Will this sleep apnea diagnosis become a major hurdle combined with the afib rf ablation? It has taken me some time to get all the tests scheduled and completed, so I don’t have enough time left to start seeing a sleep specialist before all the afib requested paperwork and tests are due before the 90 day deadline. Do you think they will deny, or request documentation regarding treatment for the sleep apnea? I am 39, 6’5, 202lbs, and fit. Thanks in advance.

This a question best answered by our participating AME's: Dr. Bruce Chien, (@bbchien) and Dr. Lou Fowler (@lbfjrmd)

Be patient for their replies, as they are super busy in real life and stop in when they have a few nanoseconds of spare time.

the sleep apnea could likely be included in the SI. I would think the FAA will investigate the OSA findings. I won't be a major hurdle, just another issue to be dealt with.

For sleep apnea you need

copy of the sleep study
30 day machine report of use showing >75% of nights in which use exceeds 6 hours
The “well treated” letter from the doc-
No complaint of daytime sleepiness
Appears refreshed
Complies nightly
On exam, no stigmata of right heart failure.....
