I wouldn't need the GPS chip in the cellular iPad since Sentry would provide WAAS.

No, but the iPad's optional cellular+GPS module does make for a good backup.

Need? No. Nice to have? Definitely.

My iPad air does not have cellular/GPS, but works great with the sentry 3 and Foreflight. I have a panel mount WAAS GPS if the iPad or sentry croaks. And an iPhone with cellular/GPS and Foreflight as a backup backup.

My iPad has doesn't have cellular/GPS, I use a Bad Elf and Stratux. The rental planes have stratus transponders that also link to ForeFlight, as well as the panel GPS. I've ForeFlight on my phone, so I think I'm covered.

You’ll be fine flying with a non-cellular iPad if you have a separate GPS receiver it can link to. However, the GPS backup is nice to have, as well as cellular data in the event you find yourself somewhere without a WiFi password or a slow connection.
