Hey ya'll, I have a Cessna 170. I will not be getting rid of, I learned to fly in it and I plan on teaching my girls in it too. I'm considering an avionics upgrade. Would the above combination work well?

My thoughts:

I'll save a bundle of money on install as these are not required to be installed by a Garmin dealer.

GPS 175 is the "NG" Garmin GPS
GTR225 will talk to GPS and provide a 2 place intercom correct?
AV-30 will allow vacuum delete.
Tailbeacon will satisfy the ADSB requirement. (UAvionix is advertising the new Tailbeacon paired with the AV-30 will be ADSB compliant.) This will allow for removal of my KT76 completely.
Foreflight with sentry for ADSB IN

I currently have a Nothstar Loran, KX170 and KT76 I'll be replacing.

Note that the TailBeaconX is not available yet for certified aircraft.

It seems to me that if you’re adding a new GPS plus ASD-B in/out, skip the 175/Tailbeacon/Sentry combo and go straight to the Garmin GNX 375; it’s an all in one(ADSB in/out xpdr, IFR GPS) magic box that covers what you need. I installed one in my RV-8 earlier this year, it’s great little unit.

I put a GTX 335 / GTR 225 in my 140. In retrospect, I should have spent the extra money for a GTX 345, because having a portable for ADS-B in is getting annoying.

The GNX 375 is also a great idea.

George, Have you looked at the Garmin gdl50r for adsb in. It will feed ForeFlight over Bluetooth and can hardwire to a 660 as well. I put one in my skylane with a stratus esg and couldn’t be happier. I too hate portables and wires all over the cockpit.

Get some quotes. Savings from non-Garmin shop might be offset by additional effort to integrate products from different brands. Could be most cost effective approach is all-Garmin solution for easy integration. GTR 225, GTX 335/345, GNS 175, and G5/GI275.

Also, you have some options to combine 2 boxes into one. GNC 355 for GPS and COMM, or GNX 375 for GPS and ADS-B transponder.

I have the same combo as you and agree, having built in ADS-B In would be worth the extra initial cost. But both the 225 and 335 are solid products that do their job well and should last a long time. The 345 is a more complex device. There are some recent PoA threads about 345 failures, which has to be frustrating.

Agreed. Parts cost on the GPS175+TailbeaconX is about the same as a GNX375. As noted, you have to go to a Garmin dealer but then you aren't having to string extra wires all the way to the tail. Plus you get a whole lot more functionality than the 175+TBX combo

GNC 355 for GPS and COMM
Personally, I'd prefer the 375 over the 355.

I purchased a 73 177RG that had old Narco MK12D's a Cessna ADF (not working) and an old Cessna Transponder. After purchasing the RG I needed to get a quick ADS-B out installed and went with the Tailbeacon. After flying for about a year with the old Panel. I flew it up to Oshkosh 2019 and spent a lot of time in the booths (Remember back in the day Pre-Covid). I was able to make some real deals and went with the following choices; Garmin GPS 175, Aspen E5, Garmin GTR 255A Nav/Com with a KI209 (also hooked up to the E5), Garmin GTR 225 Com, Garmin GMA 345 Audio Panel and a used GTX 330, Used Castleberry 300-14EL an electric AI. The used equipment were removed for panel upgrades and came with 8130's
During Install the GTX330 is hooked up to the 175 giving me my Wass GPS source, I plan to send the 330 out for the ES upgrade for ADS-B out and put the Tailbeacon on another plane. I also have a Garmin Aera 660 hardwired to the GPS 175 using Garmin MapMx and the 225, the 175 is wired to the 255. The integration is great. I can control the 225 from my 660 located on the yoke. I can send flight plans from 660 to 175, or bluetooth my Ipad running Garmin Pilot to the 175. I just prefer having separate boxes than having just one box like the (GTN650) I guess that comes from getting a tv with a built in VCR that failed years ago.

Thanks all for the responses! I have now rethought this and I'm now leaning toward the 375 and 225. This will get me GPS+ADSB IN/OUT+COMM+Intercom.
