OK, so I click on this thread and I get thread not found? Abducted by aliens?

It appears that the AI bot has been erased from existence.

And I had just composed a Magna Carta of a response, too.... when I tried to post my magnum opus, I received the message that the thread did not exist. Sigh. Shall I post it here and see if this thread (or I) also disappear(s)? ;)

I like it! The bot posting nonsense about artificial intelligence ruling our future got obliterated by old-fashioned human intelligence.

We've seen the future!

The airlines deleted my post. I pointed out that since everyone is using video-conferencing now, corporate travel budgets will be permanently slashed. The bean counters will have to be fired if the managers want to go back to in-person meetings.

If your response was going to be another extract from War and Peace, well, maybe best not to proceed. Wow, that book is off my list of books to be read some day.

It is interesting that the threads were completely deleted. Don’t feed the troll and all that, but I wonder why they couldn’t have just locked the threads and utilized the ban hammer on the OP.

While the thread may have been deleted, it is possible the database lost the link, or another software problem.

As was correctly observed above, the original poster of the thread has been invited to go on vacation. In some cases when this happens, threads started by the user are deleted. This was one such instance.

:(:(Some of my best work(I thought anyway). Gone forever. :(:(

(I'm not complaining... just asking)

When a referenced post is manually deleted, I've received an alert telling me that my own post was deleted because it referenced the deleted bad post.

When an entire thread is deleted, it's gone without fanfare.

Do I have that correct?

Thanks

It depends on which buttons are pushed in the software. Basically the answer is that you may or may not getting a warning that your post/thread was deleted for whatever reason. Some of it has to do with the Xenforo software, and some of it has to do with the particular moderator doing the deleting. For example, I am notoriously bad about not clicking the "Let poster know his/her post was deleted for [reason]" button. That's my fault.

(I didn't do the deletions in this case, I think the threads were just deleted in full and the posters inside the thread were not notified)

How many software engineers does it take to change a light bulb? None, it's a hardware problem.

How many hardware engineers does it take to change a light bulb? None, everything can be fixed in software.

(and thanks for the explaination)

You're welcome. :)

Really my job simplified is to explain to customers that software is hard and so is hardware.

I have my doubts about that. I like a lot of people are burned out on Zoom meetings.

There is a lot to be said for in person contact. We've had the ability to do video conferencing for many years, yet it never became the threat to travel that everyone predicted. I have a friend that used to own a business producing widgets. He always said what sold his widgets was not his product, but the fact that he would travel to meet his clients face to face, or fly them back to his facility to show them first hand what they were buying. When you are dealing with million dollar contracts, the person that takes the time to show up will earn more points than the guy sitting in his living room with a sport coat and no pants while on a laptop.

I'll say that I did the manual deletions of the threads, after the MC agree that this is the course we should take. We can spam ban posters as long as it's within a certain length of time from when they joined. This eliminates everything. This poster was past the deadline, however. The software apparently doesn't notify everyone in the thread that it is gone, and there's no way I was going to do that manually. ;)

I suspect sales travel might recover, but those of us who don't need to sit on-site in a windowless basement to do our job shouldn't need to travel as much. The problem is 'management by wandering around' is much more difficult with a distributed workforce. IT has always been slooowwwllllly allowing remote work but hopefully this will be the spike needed for the big companies to realize they don't really need all that office space.

LOL Feel better getting that off your chest? ;)

Eh, I've been mostly remote for 4 years now. I'm just hoping my peers in the industry can get the same deal and improve their quality of life. I know my blood pressure was never higher than when I had to drive 1.5 hours/day to the office.

I just meant that it must be important to you to post it in a thread about a deleted thread.

uh huh - blame the software...

;)

edit: oops. isn't this how we got into trouble in the first place? nuts...

Reminds me of the movie Up in the Air with George Clooney. George’s job gets replaced by video conferencing. Of course in the end, they realize that in person can’t replace video conferencing so he “hits the road” again. Part of me thinks that kind of travel schedule would be cool but the reality would be it gets old real quick.

Funny you should mention that movie - one thing I've noticed while staying at a hotel with a conference in progress is all the crazy partying that occurs. Seems like corporate types like to use conferences as an excuse to drink in excess and cheat on their spouses. :)

Anyone that’s on the road all the time will drink in excess and cheat on their spouses. ;)

I don't know about the cheating part, but a lot of business dealings have been known to be done over a glass or two of "social lubricant".

Yeah, the cheating was mostly a tongue in cheek comment. I’ve just noticed that conferences seem like a venue for grown adults to let loose for a few days!

I can't believe I wasted brain cells reading this thread about a deleted thread. Not to 'needle' anyone, though.

Whatever happens with the Rona, I doubt anyone will take 8 hrs in their autonomous Tesla over a 1hr hop on the airlines.

I think that you give people too much credit. I think that the lazy will be happy to sit in the car for eight hours. But it really comes down to safety. Once the insurance companies feel that this is safer, they will charge a premium for the people who still want to drive. The regulators and politicians will limit driver cars to designated secondary roads.

Plus an hour of parking and going through security; plus an hour of checking in, boarding, and taxiing; plus an hour of egress, waiting for bags, and getting a rental car, plus an hour of driving to where you were going in the first place...

Yeah, there's no such thing as a "1 hr hop on the airlines."

This reminds me of a great article in AOPA Pilot back in 2002, when Barry Schiff (IIRC) had a friend who said he'd grabbed a ticket for "a quick flight to Vegas" for the weekend (I understand they both lived around LA). Schiff sarcastically responded "A quick flight? On the airlines? I bet I could beat you there in my Citabria!" They agreed that they'd each leave at a prescribed time on Friday evening, and whoever was sitting in a particular bar at one of the big casinos with a drink in their hand first was the winner. Schiff and his Citabria won the race.

Sure, except that I’d imagine a large part of why he won was not having to sit in a car to get to the big airport to catch the airline.

It couldn't possibly have had anything to do with all the time spent after getting to the big airport (check in, boarding, taxi, getting off the airplane, getting out of the destination airport, etc). nope.

I can get from DC to Boston door to door in 4hrs, driving is 8hrs at night and 10hrs during the day. Not even a contest. DC to NYC it's closer if there is no traffic But then, I have done this 'flying on the airlines' thing for a while so I dont wait in a line for the rental car or check bags.

implied... yet another example of how a poster can mean one thing and have a reader see it from a different perspective.
