Asking for a friend, really, has anyone else had issues with the skybeacon not working in anonymous mode? He's got one on his plane, and it shows up in flight aware even when it's supposed to be anonymous.

Uavonix confirmed to him that if it's not properly communicating with the transponder or is shielded from radar, anonymous mode won't work. I guess it depends on seeing the 1200 response to radar interrogation and otherwise defaults to not anonymous.

This seems like a pretty big flaw to me and something that would come up a lot. Has anyone else experienced this?

None of the 1090ES have this feature, just UAT. I would not be concerned about being anonymous as long as the ADS-B OUT is working.

I would get a PAPR on the flight that showed up on flight aware. This will confirm if the ADS-B OUT is working properly. It will show any problems, plus the transponder code during that flight.

I understand that anonymous mode is not a significant feature for some pilots. But this installation is supposed to support anonymous mode, and there is an issue with it not working. Trying to figure out if it is widespread.

If the anonymous mode is not working because it is not picking up the 1200 (and altitude) from the transponder, then your friend's ADS-B Out system does not meet the "corresponding performance requirement as specified in § 91.227."

This was exactly why I suggested to get a PAPR. Thanks, Capt. Thorpe :).

uAvonix at least implied that it could also happen when the transponder is not being interrogated by radar even though everything is configured and working properly. I found this thread on the issue as well: http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=168704&page=25

It passed the PAPR. The transponder and adsb are working. It even shows up in flight aware. And therein lies the issue because it's configured for anonymous mode...

The reason I asked about the transponder is because if he has a Mode S transponder, then he would not be anonymous as the system is capable of tracking Mode S transponder with out ADS-B. And it is your Mode S transponder that is xmiting your identity. Here is a link from FlightAware that explains it more fully. "MLAT allows Mode S-enabled aircraft without ADS-B to be tracked using ADS-B ground receivers"
