Subsonic Airliner sets speed record

Don't 744's cruise at mach 0.88? Or have they dialed that back now? I seem to recall reading somewhere that below 0.84 the plane actually burn more gas for a given distance as a result of the way the Mach waves form around the plane.. I have no idea if that's true or not

Now that's a Speedbird! ;)

It had a peak groundspeed of 824mph. That is about Mach 1.07.

Hefty tailwinds courtesy of the big storm hitting western Europe today.
Yeah, it was messy; I watched BigJets live feed from Heathrow. More go-arounds than you could count.

This highest GS I ever saw in something I was traveling in was 776 mph on a Northwest DC10 flight many many years ago from Boston to Amsterdam.. monster tailwind

During the hold at about 11,000 ft, GS varying by about 225kt. Diverted Frankfurt.
