First trip to Big Bear today

I finally made it up to Big Bear today in the new Comanche. What a beautiful airport especially an approach from the west and over the lake.

Don't forget to lean the mixture outbound, and accelerate in ground effect.
 
Nice. L35 is a fun place to fly in/out of in So Cal.

Transitioning the area I like to stop in Big Bear for fuel. Saves fuel and time climbing back to cruise alt from 6700' MSL airport. :7)
 
What's this flying your new plane around to nice places, having fun and posting pictures? :eek:

You're supposed to have it in a shop, interior ripped out and a new thread started here asking our advice to help you spend your remaining credit capacity on a new glass panel and center stack. :happydance:

Yeah, I notice gas was $3.35 per gallon and $4.99 per gallon at my home airport.

Jet Fuel? Cause 100LL is a still very good $4.38 a gallon at L35. The only issue is DA may make filling up a pucker factor issue in a non turbo
 
Just noticed. Apparently you can enroll in Jiu-Jitsu classes if needed to fend off bandits.

Jiu-Jitsu may not help with fending off the big bears, however. ;)

I remember a July takeoff from there, during which I felt it necessary to abandon my plan to turn downwind and climb over the lake, due to anemic climb performance. Instead I made a slight left turn and climbed over a meadow.
 
Yeah, I did a flight through there last summer. Figured I'd climb over the lake then turn north to head home. Had to make that turn north a couple of 360's to climb over the terrain. It is a great airport to fly in to though.
 
Yeah Im wondering how my Comanche 180 will do getting out of there in the summer. With two people it should be fine. Right?
 
When it's nice and cold up there, two people in my Tiger with fully topped off tanks is easy peasy. Summer with 10K DA...that gets a bit more interesting :)

Fly into there all the time, gas is usually $4.10ish. I’m stationed at KPOC and gas is $5.35. 20 minute flight to $2 a gallon is worth it when you get 80+ gallons

Great pics. Congrats on the Comanche and first flight to L35. I was there at the same time as you. I have the red and white Comanche 260B and was parked to the right side as you exit the terminal bldg.

100ll was $4 38/gal., yesterday at L35. Still better than most SoCal airports. Cable has a special for this month at $4.10. Flabob usually has great prices, too. That is a fun airport to fly in and out of, too.

You should have no problem with 2 guys coming out of L35 in the summer. Just lean before take off. It was a great day to go up there, yesterday. I go often. May go again next Sunday and go snowboarding with my grown kids.
 
Yes Big Bear is, perhaps, the nicest airport in California. I especially like it if flying to northern California since I lose much less altitude descending en-route and it has (or had ) a nice restaurant and good fuel prices. The first time I flew there in my 65HP Aeronca Chief it was just a dirt strip, no facilities. That was a looong time ago. I would camp by the airstrip.

Yeah, just lean for density altitude and make sure you aren't butting up against your gross weight. With about 800 pounds on board, my Tiger got up in about 2500' on a cool, but not cold, day there not long ago.

The restaurant is still there. It is decent, though not my favorite. Big Bear is a beautiful place, though I wouldn't say it is the nicest airport in California.

It would add complication.

Then every trip to/from Phoenix, or Calif is an international trip.
My destination airport in Phoenix is DVT which is not an international airport.
I have the team at First Flight to do my maintenance.
Easier to drive the truck across.

Speaking of, I'm leaving for there shortly.
