Went out to practice with my CFI in some crazy winds today. Slow flight into the wind at 3000 MSL and our ground speed was a whopping 20 knots. Any more wind and we could’ve been flying backwards! Ok, maybe not but it was interesting to see how much a 14 knot wind on the surface could affect me at a higher altitude. Takeoffs and landings were also interesting with a gust factor of 7 knots.

Fun, ain't it?

I hovered once in a 152, or 172...don't remember... Have to look at my logbook.

I remember the odd feeling, but I understood why we weren't going forward, and also not falling out the darn sky...

It was pretty darn cool, until we had to fly back to the airport. Just below the redline on the tach and we were pegged at 60kts. Downwind was something like 120-130.

We were bucking 50KT headwinds last night between Wichita Falls and Midland.

I always tried to take advantage of high wind in order to demonstrate to students the relationship between airspeed and groundspeed. I had a few favorite mountain ridges that always produced a nice leeward flow and guaranteed a fun ride!

We often had negative groundspeed in a C-150.
