I know most/all doctors carry insurance for medical mistakes. Evidently pretty expensive.

Any other occupation have insurance? We have a new bike trail that is being redone due to bad slope/gradient. So would the engineer have insurance to cover that issue?

Yes. Engineering firms carry liability insurance. So do lawyers, architects, accountants...

They might also have an Error & Omission (E&O) policy.

Airlines for pilots loss of medical.

If you ask for a certificate...also make sure they have products and completed operations...

And some engineers seek to limit their liability for design defects, etc. In some states they may do so, in others they may not. So beyond checking the insurance certificate, see what limitations on liability, if any, are in the contract with the engineer or engineering firm.

There is your typical General Liability that most everyone has but there is also a "Professional Liability" that is a catchall for most other industries. (AKA :Errors and Omission Policy)

We have a client that we won a contract because they previous vendor said "it could not be done" and then overcharged them hundred of thousands of dollars in the process of executing the contract. We came in the next year and not on did "it" but did it on budget as well...now they are going after the previous company's professional liability coverage in litigation for the overcharges.

No one was "hurt" or suffered a loss which would be the general liability, but the professional liability is supposed to cover the unforeseen costs of that companies work due to either errors or even incompetence.

So the Engineer"s Professional Liability policy should be what they go after for the cost of the redo work if it was an error by the engineer.
