I bought a used headset from an A&P that I know, a set of david clarks. I put in fresh AA batteries and the next day had a plan to fly out. WHen I was in the cockpit I wondered why I couldn't turn the device on. Opened the battery compartment to find this (see attached). Did I pay $200 to throw this away or can I clean this to restore it back to usability?

Looks like it’s ate up with corrosion.

Use a touch of vinegar on the affected areas to clean that out.

It appears this is all alkaline salts, and with some vinegar and water I can clean them. Phew. Just the battery box and cord retail for $200.

Correct. Vinegar is a great common household acid to neutralize it.

Stay out of trouble now, you hear?

This looks like it would fit:

You are half done! Sometimes the corrosion process leaks some goo which serves as an insulator inside the battery.

It also prevents the headset from working.

To remove this goo you need to swab the formerly corroded areas with some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol.
